Could They Target Marcus Pettersson

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 23, 2020
Published: Sep. 23, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Penguins acquiring Mike Matheson could mean that they are making Marcus Pettersson expendable for trade. IMO the Leafs should pounce on it, he is a very solid two-way defenceman, kinda like Jake Muzzin. I'd also try to get Bryan Rust in a deal as well.

Lol Rust for Marner, retention or not, is the biggest joke I've ever heard.

Rust doesn’t have as much talent as Marner, but he still scored 10 more goals & at PPG this season. Makes 7 Million less. You have to take contracts into consideration too.

rust had one year of ppg, Marner has had consecutive seasons on pace for 90+ points. Rust 28, Marner 23. Rust career high prior to this season, 38 points, Marner's career high prior to this season, 94 points. Not really a close call for me, for all we know Rust could dip back down to 3rd liner production next year

Rust for Marner with retention. Pettersson for the 1st.

Marner is a 90pt two way elite winger. Rust is not elite. He is a great player, but nowhere close to Marner. And retention on Marner is nuts. Way off.

no he isn't.

Yes he is, Leaf fans disrespecting Rielly and thinking every top line defenceman is better than him is embarrassing. The guy is a beast but like most things these days, people forget how good he is because he wasn't amazing due to injury this year. A healthy season, a good partner and a full year under Keefe and Rielly will be a Norris contender again. Imagine if he was like Josi and got to play with Ellis? Instead he gets Ceci and then blamed for having to carry his useless ass around. Then morons say, Hainsey made him great. It's ****ing stupid.

when did I say he was bad? I just said Ekblad is better. Ekblad has like no defenseman beside Weegar that help him too

Yandle? Even now he's better than any partner Rielly has ever played with.

You have to take quality of linemates into consideration. Marner has been playing full time alongside an elite C for the last 2.5 seasons (Kadri, Tavares, Matthews). Rust only played with Geno this season, before he was on the third line. If you look at their advanced analytics, Rust has a Wins Above Replacement of 5.8 over the past 3 seasons, Marner 5.5. Not saying Rust is better, obviously Marner is more talented, but the gap between them is not as big as you think.

If you're retaining on Marner you need to get a Haul. even if you don't retain you better get some legit players/prospects/picks back.

He is overpaid, sure. but he is young and puts up over a ppg and is only going to get better. Also half of his real $$ has been paid.

Also Petterson is Pittsburgh's 4th best D-man, if you're trading Marner and Retaining the cost starts with John Marino.

Also Florida says no, and IMO you should keep Holl if you'd only get a 3rd.
