Team: 2020-21 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 23, 2020
Published: Sep. 23, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assumed these priorities:
1. space next season for pettersson, hughes
2. retain assets: 2/3 of tanev, markstrom, toffoli
3. cost controlled RHD or star RHD. why trade assets for a 1-for-1 replacement of stetcher or tanev at a similar salary?
4. upgrade #3C: must PK
5. leave space for young D, F prospects to play if they want to from camp

Thoughts:
-didn't upgrade the RD in this one
-stetcher, benn, roussel, sutter, leivo all options to be dealt after camp or at trade deadline if other players (juolevi/rathbone, rafferty, baertschi, hoglander, podkolzin) beat them for their spots. space to sign podkolzin later in the year. 33 million in cap space to handle the signing of pettersson, hughes, demko + 8 players, where team's main priority would remain quality RHD and 3C. Backes shifts canucks cap burden away from next season to this season while representing a defensive upgrade on gaudette.

interesting - would love to hear from other wings fans given I think gaudette's probably worth more than dipietro.

lets put it this way: would gladly swap gaudette for dipietro in that trade.

We do need a center, I just think position of need is goalie for wings, plus it also solved your kraken goalie issue in a year

Wings fans could care less about DiPietro in a return. I’d ask for Höglander.

My biggest problem with this is the idea that Backes would be an upgrade at 3C over Gaudette; I'd be surprised if he was an upgrade over Beagle at 4C at this point. As others noted above it might be better to hold onto Gaudette and use Demko to dump Loui if possible instead.

The rationale behind requesting the goalie is based on what the Wings need in the future, rather than the present. Does Gaudette have top six potential? Unlikely. The Wings have plenty of young guys that should be up in the next year or two that can fill the bottom six. What they lack is a quality goalie prospect that is close to being ready for the NHL (hopefully Filip Larsson can stay healthy and become one, but that's not something they can count on). Does Gaudette make the Wings better next year? Yeah, a bit, but looking at the long term view that really isn't very important.

DiPietro is not that guy to be our legit future #1, he’s barely a better prospect than Filip Larsson. DiPietro is not at the level of Demko. Why do you think smallish 6 foot goalie prospects hold so much value

If they don't value DiPietro as a top 10 goalie prospect then you're absolutely right.

Welcome to CapFriendly!

This is an interesting trade from Anaheim's perspective. Bear in mind that we're planning on playing Backes at #4 C and he's only owed $1.5 million for the remainder of this season. (Boston is retaining $1.5 million of his salary.)
