Quoting: alwaysnextyear
Ahem, I bet your pardon good sir!
I pitched this based on the premise that VAN re-signs Markstrom, making Demko a realistic trade chip to move Eriksson. I included the often-rumoured-on-the-move Virtanen as a way of avoiding having to include other picks in the deal, something Benning said he’d rather not do. I also think the value is pretty well in line with what it’ll take to move Loui; it won’t be cheap.
Sure, I agree it takes something to get something. And I'm not saying this is an awful trade - it's just not something that is necessary as of yet. The chances Virtanen gets moved are large, so the pieces in this trade are fair.
Obviously the Markstrom scenario is a possibility. We won't know for another week and a half.
My point here is that now is NOT the right time to move Eriksson. If a Marc Staal type player can be traded with one year for the value of a 2nd (about the value of Virtanen), then why not wait the year? I'm not going to say Demko is an elite goalie based off of 3 games, however he was a highly touted prospect from the begining, and typically goalies turn the corner abruptly.
Demko is worth more to the organization than his trade value suggests. We can make due with the cap of Eriksson for a year more and pay the price necessary then. As of now, I'm more for moving Virtanen with a piece like Baertschi.
Fair value? Potentially. But this is the type of trade that should happen only if 100% necessary, which from a Canucks perspective, it simply isn't worth it. I'd rather bear the risk to see if Demko builds on his performance next year than move him for cap that likely just ends up as another bad free agent signing.
