Building Another Cup Champion - Keeping the RFAs

Created by: CoopsTroops
Team: 2020-21 Tampa Bay Lightning
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 29, 2020
Published: Oct. 1, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Going back-to-back is never reasonably expected, however, following the same formula as before could yield the same result.

At Forward:
- The Palat/Point/Kucherov line returns.
- Stamkos rejoins the 2nd line with Gourde moving up to LW.
- Verhaeghe slides into Center the Goodrow/Coleman line Gourde left.
- Stephens and Volkov join Maroon to continue the Lightning's history of having a reliable defensive 4th line.
- The only concern among these lines is Verhaeghe and Volkov being consistent over the season, but Katchouk and Raddysh would see playing time on the last year of their ELCs. Perhaps even Barre-Boulet makes his NHL debut.

At Defense:
- Sergachev lands a deal close to McAvoy's.
- Cernak is re-signed.
- Bogo is brought back because.
- Foote gets to play a lot of NHL minutes with Schenn or Rutta as alternatives and Gaunce available in a pinch.
- My main concern on defense is Foote stepping in to play big minutes in what was one of the strongest groups on the team during 2020. If he cannot make it this year, Rutta and Schenn fill out 3RD as A & B options.

In Net:
- The long-running tradition of the Rangers sending players to Tampa via trade or free agency (after a buyout in this case - again) continues. King Henrik signs at the league minimum to backup Vasy for one last run at the cup.

Misc:
- Don't get caught up in the Johnson's NTC, if someone who wants him is found its there or waivers in my ruthless ACGM.
- Expansion draft strategy could involve looking to sell Seattle on McDonagh as their top pairing LD, or to take Gourde, to clear out cap for signings once bridge deals expire in the next 2-3 years.
- Coburn is an assumed retiree, otherwise he's traded to another team (Ottawa) to eat his cap for the season but not play.

Detroit declines, You're not getting basically a late 1st round pick for a player we don't need and late 2nd and 3rd round picks.

There's obviously other teams speculatively linked to Killorn - Colorado, Jersey, etc... - but having just read Smith's article today where he spoke of the fit there I went ahead and put Killorn in the deal with Paquette to MTL.

I figured that might be a little low on Tampa's side. Does changing the 3rd to next years 2nd do anything for you?

Also Yzerman turned a late 2nd into Kucherov and a late 3rd into Point. Don't sell your GM short on what he can do with more picks. His record in Tampa with 1st rounders is pretty spotty too. Personally, I'd take the picks.

I can definitely see them being interested in Paquette, solid bottom 6 player. I think they would have more interest in Gourde/Palat vs. Killorn but I don't know if tampa would be open to moving them

We might do the Caps 2nd but our 2nd is off the table.

There's been talk of Yzerman pursuing Killorn as well. Probably tons of teams looking at Killorn.

I'd move Gourde over Killorn, not sure what GMJBB would do, but Killorn was traded here because he has a M-NTC as opposed to Gourde's full NTC. But my first choice in a perfect world would have been to send 2 Quebec born players to Montreal to offload cap.

Ok I'll stop you here, maybe the 2021 1st for Killorn but definitely not the 2020 1st.

With Hank hitting UFA I could see him going to 2 places to be with friends, Tampa (for McDonagh) and Minnesota (for Zuccarello).

I could see WPG inquiring about McElhinny, maybe Vegas. Bot San Jose though, they are looking for a starter/1A

Jets would probably also have interest in Johnson for 2C, the question is whether or not he will waive to Canada.

Sergachev contract is nice, you can probably get Cernak for less with 1-2 year deal and probably too much for Bogo. Also please don't resign Rutta, he's a train wreck. Use that extra cap space to pay Cirelli for a 4th year.

Coburn hopefully waives for actual ice time somewhere because he wont get it in Tampa, worst case he's put on waivers and he's picked up for free by someone.

Stammer will probably play 2LW with Cirelli and I wouldnt separate our 3rd line from the playoffs. I would really love to inquire about Bobby Ryan to play on the right of Cirelli if he doesnt cost too much.

Unfortunately Maroon is probably gone but I would love to have him back again

Before today I had him down as a 2nd and a 4th. Interest seems to be high, and when Smith mentioned MTL's mid-round 1st I went ahead and assigned him a 1st rd value.

That's no good for acquiring Foerster then. Also, don't be surprised though if Yzerman does end up with Joseph at some point this offseason. Erne did not turn out too well, but he'll likely take another flyer on one of his ex-picks stuck in the Lightning system for a 4-7 round pick.

Killorn is just a winner.. guy you want .. was given the "A" with Tampa for reason .. can score hit and has grit .. if/when we lose Maroon and Paquette losing him concerns me that we go back fo being whimpy shrimps..

Just going off Smith's article today with him mentioning Killorn and their first and how they've expressed interest in trading it.
Johnson goes wherever he's wanted or waivers in this ACGM.
Bogo's FA value has me puzzled, I think he returns to Tampa though. Rutta is back because Cooper is still the coach and I believe he likes him a lot.
Coburn said last year he does not want to move his family from Tampa. If they say there's no role for him he likely retires or accepts a trade where someone like Ottawa is paid to eat his cap with no expectation of playing.
Always good to mix up the lines a bit, but nothing stopping a Goodrow/Gourde/Coleman reunification at some point.
Ryan would be a great add to Stamkos' line if it could be done.

Glad they won the cup this year, Because after this season it might be a little harder to repeat next season depending on who they lose.

Fans don't realize how important grit/PK players are in playoffs .. Killorn and Maroon were on Lightning PP in playoffs as goalie screeners.. PK was Colemen Goodrow Paquette and Cirelli .. so while the big guys get most of points and fan fare .. the grinders give them both room and rest.. THIS is main reason Ta.pa won cup and would hate to go backwards

Killorn is gone bud, nothing we can do. I hope to keep Maroon, but Paquette's cap is unjustifiable when Stephens performs the same tasks with better faceoff skills.

Then we lose and go back to the "whimpy shrimps" .. huge GM error if Tyler Johnson and Gourde still around and Killorn gone

Gourde an Johnson are no wimps. Johnson led the team in hits some nights and Gourde was trying to fight Oleksiak, who is almost a foot taller. Stephens also is no wimp, just not someone looking to make borderline illegal hits as Paquette has been known to do.
