20-21 Leafs - What should have been

Created by: Britishbulldog
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 21, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Crying over spilled milk...

The reports were that Lou knew that Tavares wasn't going to re-sign and was going to sign and trade Tavares to the Leafs for $10.6 MIL x 8 years for Martin, Komarov and a draft pick saving $0.4 a year off the CAP.
-It was also suggested that making Matthews the highest paid player would have been possible at $1 MIL less for $10.634.
-Marner was suspected to be willing to sign for $9 MIL before Matthews was given $11.634 MIL.
-Nylander was projected to go between $6 and $6.5 MIL

Also similar to McDavid, Draisaitl, Eichel, etc all 3 RFAs should have been signed to 8 year deals.

That would have easily given the Leafs room to re-sign Rielly to a 'retire a Leaf' 8 year at an appropriate amount (8 years @ $7.5 - $8??).

Also Hyman could have been easily given a $4 - $4.5 MIL contract to retire a Leaf after carrying his $11 MIL perimeter playing linemates while doing ALL the heavy lifting. I felt that his linemates should have given Hyman $2 MIL each of their salaries because he let them play soft, skilled, regular season style hockey while racking up their points.

Not even... Tavares at 7 years 11m is actually better. Matthews was never going to sign for less. MRner wanted 9.5m after a 69 point season...

This is all just ridiculous.

Marner contract could be better everything else is fine.

Actually I would have prefered not seeing Tavares at all and trying to work out the on-ice/off-ice things with Kadri at a significantly less cap hit. Tavares is obviously a much better player but not almost 3 times better.

Maybe someday Matthews will be able to carry this team to a Stanley Cup but he can't even get the Leafs past the 1st round or past an offensively challenged team in a play-in round. Don't you feel that by the time he is able to mature to that level that his current deal will be expiring and he will be a UFA able to demand any amount from any team he wants to play for?

Is allowing the player set their value better than looking at market value for a small forward that is outplayed by TBay's Point @ $6.75 MIL? 33 points this past playoffs. How many points has Marner scored in his CAREER in the NHL playoffs? Marner is being paid as a superstar and is less than a year younger than Point.

How many Stanley Cup teams are carrying $10+ MIL players? How many non-Stanley Cup calibre teams are carrying $10+ MIL players? I think there is a direct correlation.

I hear what you are saying in regards to what the Leaf players wanted and felt they are worth. I just can't believe that you agree with them.

I don’t agree with the marner contract, no one does. But it is what it is. Should be 1-2m less. You can’t really compare him to bridge deals either. Apples to oranges.

Matthews is a beast. Literally the best goal scorer in the league. Is talented everywhere on the ice and has developed a decent two way game. You pay him what he wants or you take the draft pick compensation.

I love having Tavares. It sucks the cap didn’t rise like it was suppose to last year and then stayed flat this year but teams offered him more and he chose to come here for less.

Dubas is doing his best to build around the talent. Believe hawks were the last team to win a cup with top heavy players. Pittsburgh went through the same troubles to building around Malkin and crosby.

I’m excited for the leafs season every year. This years team might be one of the best teams we have iced in my lifetime. I have a really good feeling this season. But as always there is a high degree of luck involved in winning a cup. I’m just looking for the longest season possible and enjoying watching my team okay at a high level.

alright, so uh.

1) There was no "sign-and-trade" in place for Tavares. Given the fact he tried to sue the Maple Leafs for tampering, I doubt he was going to gift him their franchise centre for under market value while taking the rough-and-tough guys.

2) A 12 x 8 was proposed for Matthews at the start of the 2018-19 season. He doesn't take 10.634 for 8 years.

3) The Marner contract has been discussed to death, but he put up 94 points in 2018-19 over the two guys making 11 million. He wasn't going to negotiate until the offseason. Yes, he is not worth the 11 million he penned for but if he's a PPG player playing 20 minutes a night I think that matters less and less as time goes on.

4) The three guys making less would greatly alter the 2018-19 and 2019-20 offseasons. They'd still get criticized for having 29 million locked up in 3 players. They may or may not have Kadri as his trade was also very dependent on his performance during the 2019 playoffs.

Actually Lou did try to offer a sign and trade in the end. It was reported by a few insiders. Trying to get something for Tavares.

Matthews number was over 13m on an 8 year deal. (Mcdavid %) I think he and dubas came to a fair compromise. My view is I don’t care what they pay him. Just keep him in the blue and white and I am happy.

And allow me to chime in with my two cents. Marner's contract may have an ugly cap hit going forward, but from today on, he's a $7 million per year forward, which is cheap for an All-Star.
