Trade with NSH

Created by: Hammerwise
Team: 2020-21 Philadelphia Flyers
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 10, 2020
Published: Nov. 10, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
JVR and Johansen had similar numbers last year, although JVR in less icetime. Johansen has 5 more years at 8mil. JVR is perfect for NSH power play.
Patrick, by all accounts now healthy, makes up for loss of Johansen. (although Laughton could be substituted).
Possibly a pick added to this deal?
Johansen or Frost get 3C, although trying to keep youth spread throughout forward lines.

Interesting concept, but I just don't see PHI trading Patrick while he is unhealthy -- and I don't see a team trading for him for the same reason.

True, I think from all reports that Patrick is skating and scrimmaging, migraine free, it all looks positive. That's the thing with migraines, they are medicinally treatable, but it takes time to find the right medicine. Its not concussions, eyes, etc... but migraine disorder. A lot comes down to continued exercise and eventually full contact, but right now he's head ache free and scrimmaging.

JVR and Johansen are both overpaid for what they are, but not by huge amounts. NSH has a great deal of options at Centre, (Duchesne, Sissons, Jarnkrot, Cousins, Richardson, Trenin, Kunin), but no 1C, but moving on from Johansen, who is an average 1C might work.

If JVR and Johansen put up similar numbers why would the Flyers want that extra $1m and add another 2 years. Unless you're betting on Johansen rebounding to his previous numbers. And if that's the case, putting him at 3rd line center doesn't exactly set him up for success.

If Patrick is in fact healthy, he's perfect for a 3C. You can see what he has and it gives Frost another year of development. Worse case you find out Patrick isn't healthy and Frost isn't quite what we thought he is, then you can go out and get a 3C in the 2021 offseason knowing those two just haven't panned out. Worse case scenario with Johansen is he's your above average center making $8m per season until 2025.

Going after Johansen - especially with Hayes making north of $7M and the pair combining for over $15M - is a bit of a head scratcher. I think it would really hurt the team’s long term contract success with Hart, Sanhiem, Couturier, and Farabee all needing new deals in the coming seasons. JVR being close to done with his deal by then might make dumping him a bit easier.

But, credit to the original poster for this is a new trade idea and not a bad one.

True, but Coots only makes 4.33 so, you've got 20mil in 3 pivots. And Johansen could play 1RW instead of Frost.

but only Sanheim and Hart are re-signs and theres enough UFA money coming off (Raffl, Laughton, Gustafsson, Elliot and the 2mil in cap space) for next year. After 2 seasons time, you've got a lot of movement with Braun, Coots, Giroux all UFAs, so I agree its a bad long term investment.

As far as 8mil wasted on the third line, if the team can afford it and upgrade on defense, while hedging its reliance on Patrick/frost why not?

To be fair Johansen is the best player, who is coming off a down year. Is 5 yrs at 8mil a good move, probably not, but Johansen could play 1RW with coots and Giroux and safeguard over reliance on Frost, who could play 3C with Voracek and Farabee.

Its a move shown above that works financially and still enables picking up a UFA like Hamonic or Vatanen for 2RD. Hart and Sanheim are the only re-signs next year, with Raffl, Elliot, Gus and Laughton coming off and 2mil in cap space, so that's doable. Its about making this years team as quality as possible. JVR for Johansen is a pure win, the better player, the better 2 way guy, but you don't get quality without offering it, and Patrick is included. If Patrick is healthy on this team, hes a 3rd liner in this lineup, but the worry of progress in play or medical setback is still present. In this lineup you're trading 2 3rd liners, including 30 yr old 1-dimensional JVR for a 1st or 2nd liner. Again its a move that makes this tyeam better over the next 2 years and doesn't hurt financially until after 3 seasons.

Who knows what happens after 2 years (2 seasons) time with Giroux, Frost, Farabee, Hagg, NAK and Coots.

Interesting idea, and if I'm the flyers I'd rather have JVR and the upside of a Nolan Patrick than 5 years 8 mil of Johansen. I don't think it is a terrible offer or value at this current point, but that is just my opinion. Nolan Patrick still has the opportunity to become a good player and its hard to trade him knowing what could be, when if he was healthy, he'd likely be worth well more than a sweetener to get rid of JVR for Johansen.

At least JVR's 7 mil comes off in 3 years, and we can likely dump JVR at worst the last year of his deal with a 1st or 2nd rounder, in order to make room for Coots and G. Johansen would still have 3 years on his deal at that point, limiting cap space, and the ability to dump him, because he's overpaid at this point also.
