Ovechkin Pipe Dream

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 13, 2020
Published: Nov. 13, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Obviously it may not be the best idea to give someone who's in his mid 30s a long term contract, but I believe Ovechkin has the talent to continue scoring at an elite level for another decade. He rarely gets injured despite playing such a physical style.

Though unrealistic, do you guys think this team is a contender?

      That 1st line scream

I think it depends a lot on the goaltending. If Campbell plays like a #1 goalie, then yes, this team is a serious contender. Otherwise, I wouldn't expect them to go very far. Also, you probably need a better 4th line.

I don’t think Ovechkin cares about beating the record nearly as much as everyone else does. I think he’ll play until he feels like going back to Russia, and beating the goals record would just be a bonus if he did it.

I’m almost positive he has actually said that the day he beats that record is his last day playing. And if he wanted to go back that bad he would leave after next year. Being the first person in decades to have the ability to come close or even beat it isn’t something he would laugh at. Time will tell

Marner's contract is not changing, stop decreasing it on every AGM you make

Why on earth are people terminating marners contract or trying to get rid of him? he's a top 10 RW in the league and alocal kid whose performing like a god despite the massive pressure of playing in toronto

Yeah he’s a great player no doubt but he’s not good enough to justify his contract. That’s why most armchair Leaf threads are cutting him. Although he is still young so there’s definitely a chance he’ll elevate himself to an even higher level.

Y'all ignoring the fact Vegas isn't dealing Theodore

@vgknation702 @Cheddamonkey37 I think Nylander for Theodore is fair value wise. A top line center for top pair D.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, goaltending is pretty weak. The fourth line, all 3 guys have grit & play a solid defensive game so I wouldn't mind them.

no ones gonna take him. esp in this financial situation. plus no team is going to give assets of equal trade. any trade involving Marner will be lost.

When did Nylander become a top line center? I must have missed this year....

I see him a good first line winger, but wouldn't want him higher than second line c at this point.

Exactly, If i were Armstrong i'd be asking for 4 1st round picks to take on that much money. If not even more.

To be fair, if the coyotes acquired Marner, if anyone acquired Marner, it isn't going to be to buy him out. He's an elite winger, in my opinion top 10, but that's besides the point. I agree that taking on 11 mil per year of dead cap would cost at least 4 1sts to dump.

Dude, you are the only person on this site that believes in the nonsense that Marner's contract needed to be bought out. Sure, he's a little overpaid, but he's not overpaid near enough that the leafs should worry. They should keep him, he's still young and will get better.
