if they didn't sign tavares, they'd have kept bozak at centre (because they had no centre depth after #2) and probably kept their leading scorer JVR

so that's about $13m right there, more than they would have actually spent on letting those guys go and keeping tavares

thus we arrive at the conclusion: acquiring tavares was a good idea and was cap efficient

How about they signed Tavares, but let Matthews go in an offer sheet. Gained over 11m in cap space, plus had 4 first rounders.
