If Dermott Has A Breakout Season

Created by: AnalyticsGeek

Description
I think next season will be a make or break season for Travis Dermott. Heading into 2019/20, many Leaf fans including myself were hopeful that he would establish himself as a full-time defender in the team's top 4. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case as he still ended up being sheltered on the bottom pair. That's where he'll start again this season, but if he impresses, I expect him to overtake Justin Holl. In terms of talent, I believe he has the tools to succeed in a bigger role, it seems he just needs to find more consistency. It's not uncommon for defencemen to take time to develop, so I'm writing him off altogether.

Campbell put up a .915 sv with Leafs, I don't think you'll find anyone that was disappointed with that.

Like I said, sign and trades literally never happen, so I don't see that happening in a Pens/Leafs deal. So there was a 1% chance Leafs would go that route. 2-3 goalies min burst on the scene every year. I'm fine with the Leafs playing the waiting game rather than overpaying (in costs or AAV).

Especially when anything over $5m likely costs them the chance to re-sign Rielly in 22/33.

Ya, I agree a 1A, 1B goalie situation is probably the best option. That’s why the leafs signed Hutchinson. So they could protect Campbell and expose Hutchinson.

And it wouldn’t be a sign and trade. Murray was already signed for 5 years at 6.25M last year. He has 4 more years left on deal. 3 after this year. I wasn’t talking about a sign and trade. Just the Pens retaining 1M of his contract. So his contract would then be 5.25M/year and not 6.25M, a year.

Contracts are retained all the time. The leafs are still retaining some of Kesell’s contract. The Pens retained 50% of N.Bjugstad contract for 2 more years when they traded him to Minnesota this offseason. Now he is making 2.05M/year(for 2 more years) instead of 4.1M/ year for 2 more years. The pens retain 2M on his contract for 2 more years. Same contract though. Not resigned or signed and traded. Just like the the Leafs are retaining about 1.2M of Kessel’s contract still for life of his contract. For 2 more years. And he was even traded. But Arizona now has Kessel for 6.2M/year instead of 7.4M/year. Toronto is retaining 1.2M of that contract still. Every team has retained salary on their books still. Atleast 75% of teams do.

You're mistaken. Murray was signed by Ottawa on October 9, 2020. A few days after his trade.

Ya, ya, that’s right. You are right. They signed him to an extension. He was only signed 1 more year with the Pens. And I forget what the amount was per year!!

But u are right. He would have been a FA after this year!!

I'd be fine with this if another 3C is available.

Between prospects and ufa’s leafs will survive. Would love to keep kerfoot but if it isn’t in the cards oh well.

Agree with all you've been saying in thread.

The other unknown in all this is Lehtonen. It's possible he makes losing Dermott hurt less.

I'd prefer this not be the way it goes, but it's another variable.

Well I always hope for the best and expect the least. I hope he plays himself right off this team. I hope someone has to give him 8m. I’m expecting a 5-7 Dman.

leafs left side for the future is set with:
    Rielly/Muzzin/Sandin

    assuming their right side is:
    Brodie/Lilijren/Holl

dermott would have to play right side cause I dont see him displacing anyone on the left

I think Muzzin has a clause in his contract where he can be left unprotected for Seattle. If Kerfoot is not being taken, there are other options than Dermott.
