Then how do the Leafs upgrade their defense if they keep both. They can't.

Well, to start, they did upgrade their D this off season and we haven’t seen how it looks yet, but even if it’s similar to last year(it won’t be), upgrading defenders at the cost of playing 3rd liners in your top 6 doesn’t make you a better team. As a fan, cross your fingers that the dmen in the organization all take a step this year and their FA signings pay dividends.

Sign T.J. Brodie.

Draft.

Develop (Sandin, Dermott, Liljegren, etc.).

Grasp the new (and hopefully improved) system of team defence implemented by our coaching staff.

Defence is not only the responsibility of the 6 dmen dressed, right?

The only trade I see the Leafs accepting for Nylander is one where they get back 2 young 25 goal wingers that fit under the cap... in other words, happen ain’t gonna.

You are aware Marner was on pace for 93 points right? You can easily replace a potential 40 goal scorer than as to a 93 point playmaker. Moving away from Marner to keep Nylander is calling for failure. I would genuinely hope the Leafs trade Matthews if Marner is gone

If 40 goal scorers are so easy to come by why doesn't every team have one? there was only 5- 40 goal scorers last year, 13 the year before and only a very short list of players who can score at that pace consistently.

There's been lots of great points in earlier comments why trading Nylander is not necessary for a marginal upgrade on paper at Defense. Look at how good Holl was last year compared to the year before. I know he's not Elite but his progression was notable. I'd rather bet on Lehtonen, Dermott, Holl or Sandin to step in and play bigger minutes and keep Nylander.

Liljegren is a bust

Could be.

They only need him to be a 6th if the others play well.

So of Liljegren busts, they sign a cheap 6th.

No roads lead to Nylander being moved to "save the defence".

Alex Ovechkin was "not a playoff performer" and now he has a Conn Smythe. Nylander is only 24 and you cant blame him for not being a playoff performer when the whole team hasn't performed in the playoffs.

Ovie was never horrible in playoffs, he just always tried to do way too much, on that cup run you can really notice he simplified his game when it called for it.
