A Way to Solve the Cap Issue Without Dealing Patches

Created by: Hockyluv21
Team: 2020-21 Vegas Golden Knights
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 15, 2020
Published: Dec. 16, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Seriously, though, a late 1st is far less likely to be as valuable, percentage-wise, as Pacioretty will be in terms of win shares for the next three years. Why not use it to fix the one financial inefficiency in this team, instead of selling low on good players and squandering your cup window?

No, it does not, at least with a 21-man roster. I explain it here: https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/2131746

I like that idea actually, but doesn't that only save you about 1.9 in cap? Is that really worth a first?

The first year. The major savings is in the 2nd year. Vegas only needs to get under the cap without dealing their best players. As shown here, with this deal, Vegas would still be under even with 22 men. Also, a 3rd is coming back, so it's basically the cap version of the Goodrow deal.

reimer might be making only 800k but Nilsson is slated to go on LTIR so its even cheaper for us to keep him. Out goalie tandem is set

By how much, though? When Nilsson is ready to return, Melnyk is going to have to pay him.

Sens are a weird-a** franchise because of Melnyk being a miserly idiot LMAO, but it did sound like Nilsson wanted to eventually play this season, so I was just asking.

How is this melnyks fault? That has to be some of the laziest analysis ive seen. Nilsson has had multiple concusions over his carrer and had a brutal one last season, he probably wont be healty enough to contribute meaningfully so hes probably just going to stay on LTIR.

No, I didn't say Melnyk caused Nilsson's injury. I said that under his rule, making the team better has generally taken a backseat to penny-pinching and barely eke-ing it out to the cap floor. Like trading Zibanejad because they didn't want to pay his signing bonus, or trading Ceci for Zaitsev because Ceci's QO was more expensive than Zaitsev's post-bonus salary that year. It just seems like a miserable existence even with all of the young talent that you guys are about to receive.

yeah thats how small market teams work, same in every sport. Maybe doesnt take a backseat but the small market teams get less revenue which = less spending. Especially when the owner isint loaded to begin with

There are small markets out there in the NHL that happily spend to contend. See Carolina and Winnipeg for an example. Giannis just got his supermax yesterday with Milwaukee, of all teams.

Charlotte isn't a small market LOL, their owner is just incompetent. Milwaukee is a similar-sized market to Charlotte and they are huge spenders. Winnipeg IIRC is technically a smaller market than Ottawa.

the population of the city is not what determines the sports market. It helps visualize it but considering Ottawa is an hour from Montreal and 2 hours from Toronto, two of the biggest and most storied franchises in the NHL is certainly helps take away from the potential fanbase. You also cant compare NBA spending to NHL spending because the league revenues are massively different.
