Expanded roster but same cap

Created by: MCfubar
Team: 2020-21 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 20, 2020
Published: Dec. 20, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
As currently reported, supposedly rosters will be expanded to 23 skaters and the two goalies. There will be an additional 4 to 6 players on the taxi squad. Even though the roster has expanded, the $81.5 million cap is not expanded, so that screws cap crunched teams even more. With the season fast approaching, these cap crunched teams are going to have to do something very soon.

What will Yzerman do?
Trades
DET
  1. Alnefelt, Hugo [Reserve List]
  2. Johnson, Tyler
  3. Killorn, Alex
  4. Raddysh, Taylor
  5. 2022 1st round pick (TBL)
  6. 2023 1st round pick (TBL)
Additional Details:
Killorn and Johnson waive their NTCs fter talking with Yzerman, but it costs Tampa dearly. For Tampa to rid the contracts of Kilorn and Johnson, they are going to have to give up a 1st round pick no matter who they trade with. Yzerman assures Killorn that he will try to trade home to a cup contender at the trade deadline. Johnson gets to be a key player on a rebuilding Wings team.
TBL
  1. Erne, Adam
  2. Hirose, Taro
Additional Details:
Tampa takes care of their cap situation in one trade, so now they can sign Cirelli and Cernak, and they get back two NHL ready players at a controlled salary.

Tampa isn’t gonna have to give up 2 1st round picks and Alnefelt. They’re gonna have to probably give up a 1st to move Johnson, but not much more, and Killorn is probably close to the give away for nothing range (like a Johnsson/Anderson or Murray/5th type of deal) but if they do have to pay to move him it won’t be a 1st. Alnefelt is likely pretty close to untouchable.

Hmmmmmm....this might just be enough to entice Detroit to do this deal. Congrats @MCfubar for putting together a package that is reasonable, and doesn't involve the team bailing Tampa out to give up anything tangible.

Lots of people say this, and if this was a normal season, you would be 100% correct. However in this new post-COVID, no gate revenue, flat cap for at least two years, double escrow, 10% deferred salary world, all bets are off. On top of all this, the clock is ticking on Tampa....

I keep seeing Alnefelt having such high praise but his numbers aren’t stellar and he isn’t ranked on prospect sites for goalies. What do you think his worth actually is because I highly doubt he’s untouchable.

My thoughts on making this trade. It also provides Yzerman flexibility the trade deadline, as well as having multiple potential assets to trade: Kilorn, Ryan, Helm, Glendening, Gagner, Nemeth, Stahl, Biega, and Bernier. It makes Detroit a more competitive team this year without sacrificing the future. I could even see Yzerman trading Kilorn back to Tampa at the 2021 trade deadline, retaining half of Kilorn's salary for an additional asset.

He plays in a pro league as 19 year old. WJC numbers from last year shows his potential. You'll see again in a month how good he is.

I get that he plays in a pro league like I said but people are throwing the word “untouchable” like he is a blue chip prospect. Look at Wallstedt for blue chip Swedish goalie prospects. There’s no problem in touting a prospect but expectations especially for goalies need to be tempered. I take tourneys performance with a grain of salt because they’re too short and it’s a different system so some take longer to adjust.
