If I was forced to trade from the top

Created by: Onslaught77
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 4, 2021
Published: Jan. 4, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
It's less about would the stars do it than it is the idea behind what to do with the money if forced to trade money off the Leafs. That being said I attempted to trade so it would be beneficial to the team but the money issue would have to be worked out on the stars side. (3-way deal?)
so it's trading Marner for a decent playmaking winger who makes about 7m. The JT line is a skill vs speed line anyway so Pavelski fits right in. The Leafs could absorb the rest of the money the stars need in a rental or just let the stars trade a rental to someone. That leaves the money needed for Miro's next contract.

In hindsight, maybe the Leafs should’ve let Marner sit out the year & walk away in free agency. They could’ve used the money to sign Taylor Hall to maybe 9-10 Million long term.

Yeah. I like Marner I really do but he's replaceable on a core like this one. I get that fans love him and all but he's the only reasonable option to trade if you want to save AAV. Trading Nylander does nothing to save AAV and they can't trade JT nor would that make sense. A playmaker for JT can be slower, as long as they are skilled. All these people wanting the Leafs to trade because "you can't have that much tied up in 4 players" don't get that the only reasonable end to that argument is Marner playing elsewhere.

Few teams would be interested in trading for Marner and they certainly would not be giving up a lot to take on that contract.

I get what you’re saying but gotta make the trade realistic. Marner doesn’t have enough value to fetch a Heiskanen level D. I think trading him for Pavelski+Oleksiak is more sensible.

You’re going to have to grossly over pay or he stays if I’m Dallas

What's done is done. No one is going to help Toronto out the mess management created. Let the contracts play out while enjoying a talented team go nowhere and then start a rebuild - hopefully doing it right next time.

TBH, if the Leafs paid Marner maybe 9 Million, their long term cap situation would be a lot better & they’d be set up to build a dynasty. It’s unfortunate he’ll have to be traded but squeezing for an overpay comes at a cost.

You wanted to save money to sign Miro in the last paragraph which I read and saving money for a player you won’t get makes no sense you are going to pay a lot more than that if you want him from Dallas.

The point though is that a trade that deals with the issue would involve putting half of Marner's salary on the blueline. It really is that simple.

Walk away in free agency? That would occur in like 2024

Honestly, I don’t think the Leafs need to spend that much money on defence. Their top 3 (Rielly, Muzzin and Brodie) are already very good. Ideally you sign someone like Oleksiak for around 3.5 Million in 2021 to be the 4D and you’re all set.

That is a shining endorsement for doing exactly what the Leafs did.

Or just keep paying Holl 2 million to do a great job next to Muzzin.

Totally, who would want a 23 year old 90+ point winger in a league where scoring goals is so important?
