Penguins most definitely accept more than the Avs.

That’s a ridiculous over pay by the Avs even for Crosby.

Newhook, Alex [Reserve List]
Barron, Justin [Reserve List]
Helleson, Drew [Reserve List]
Kadri, Nazem
Donskoi, Joonas
2021 1st round pick (COL)
2022 1st round pick (COL)
2023 1st round pick (COL)

That's 5 1sts effectively (if you count Newhook and Barron as 1sts, though Newhook is more than just a 1st since he's a bluechip), plus a really promising 2nd round drafted Dman, PLUS a 2C on a cheap contract, PLUS a middle 6 forward. That's insaaane. If Crosby was 23 years old maybe you could make a case for an enormous overpayment, but at 33? Huge pass.

Yeah, it's hard to evaluate the value for an "untradeable" player.
The main point is obviously that it would be cool to see Crosby on the avs if the penguins decide to rebuild.

Even though that's not the main point, what would be a fair price then?
No firsts at all?

Newhook, Kadri, Donskoi and Helleson and one first on top is the max I would offer out of that (and even then I'm not sure I'd do it). Pens get a replacement C for now, a future top prospect at C to replace Crosby, Donskoi helps balance cap and they get a couple of decent bonus pieces on top. For a 33 yr old, even if it is Crosby, that's still a decent haul.

The hard part for the Avs is that they don't have any top-tier forward prospects to offer outside of Newhook and he is their future 2C (at least that's what they likely see him as). Plus, you're trading a 20 y/o for a 33 y/o who, to be fair, still plays at a high level but is no longer in his prime and has maybe 3-4 good years left in him compared to a guy that could conceivably, if he pans out and reaches his ceiling, play well for you for the next 15 years.

If the Pens were willing to take a package of those D prospects and picks so they could rebuild, maybe you do it but even then those D prospects might have more value to the Avs to obtain more scoring help in the future one way or another. If the Avs are reasonably sure Newhook is going to come in next year and be an effective player and be a good 2C within a year or two, there is no reason to make this trade and, in all reality, it would probably make them less likely to be a contender for as long as if they held onto those prospects and first-round picks. Don't get me wrong, it's tempting and if Crosby were a few years younger I'd probably be for it but if that were the case, he wouldn't even be in a trade conversation.

Some better replies there, thanks=)
I think the window is most wide open for the avs counting from last year until MacK's new contract, so it makes sense to maximize the chance of winning every year until that is up.
I'm super excited for Newhook and he should have a great chance at becoming at least an excellent 2C in the NHL. If he would max out being as good as Crosby would realistically be in 3 years I think most avs fans would take it. And he would probably not reach that full potential until in 4-5 years.
But yeah, taking on a 8,5 mil contract for another 5 years for a player that's already 33 is a big risk and I haven't counted how it would affect Makar and Landy's new contracts.
