classic Devils fans overrating their players lol, Hughes is off to a good start but he isn't close to being on Eichel's level yet. even if he ends up hitting his ceiling (still a ways to go) he won't be half the goal scorer Eichel is. Eich would be the best player they've had since Kovalchuk and it wouldn't even be close, let's not act like this is ridiculous overpay. it's not.

I get your point, Eichel is a terrific young player and is currently much better than Hughes, but this is still a hefty overpay in my eyes. If this trade was for Conor McDavid, then I'd do it in a heartbeat.

The biggest issue for me is mainly cost/asset management. You're getting rid of 2 promising players on ELCs and adding $10mm in salary Eichel that may walk in 5 years. Plus you're getting rid of a lot of picks/prospects for a team that's still rebuilding.

Hughes is 1 year removed from being the #1 pick in the draft, so it's reasonable to assume he'll be a very good player eventually. Even if he ends up not being not quite as good as Eichel; to trade Hughes, Mercer, a 1st (essentially 3 1st round picks), plus a 2nd and 3rd is too much for me.

If Hughes hits his ceiling, he would pass Eichel. He could also never reach Eichel. But its not overrating Hughes....its just a bet NJD fans want to take.

Also, Hall at his peak in 2018 was better than Kovalchuk at his peak. And we didn't give up nearly this much for either of them.
