Description
The reason the Leafs need to sign Shattenkirk is because they lack a true number 1 defenseman. You may think that Shattenkirk is an offensive defenseman but his corsi-against numbers show that he is very good at shutting down the opposition, albeit in a second pairing role for St. Louis. is corsi-for % is ridiculously good considering how shoots a ton and he stops the opposition from shooting a lot. Babcock is trying to make Rielly that number 1 defenseman but hes more suited in an offensive role. Both Zaitsev and Shattenkirk were signed for 7 years because Zaitsev will be 26 when he signs so the contract will take him through to 33, or through his prime in other words. Shattenkirk will be 28 and being an elite player means having a longer prime which is why he'll be signed through to 35. I also shuffled up the lines to provide more balance in terms of defensive, offensive, and two-way forwards. For the first line I put Soshnikov with Nylander and Matthews to make it a deadly first line to deal with in terms of offense and defensively decent as both Soshnikov and Matthews are two-way forwards. For the second line I left JVR and Bozak together but put a defensive specialist in Hyman with them to balance it out. For the third line, which is a shutdown/offensive line, I put Marner with Kadri and Komarov because Marner is not only good at defense, he's a beast on offense and that'll make that line an offensive and shutdown line as both Kadri and Komarov are excellent two-way forwards. For the "fourth line", I recalled Gauthier from the AHL because he too is a defensive/faceoff specialist, and I put him with 1 offensive player in Leipsic and 1 two-way forward in Brown to make that line both sound defensively and able offensively. For the first defense pair I put Shattenkirk with Rielly so it is not only deadly offensively but Kevin can also fix any mistakes Rielly makes. For the second pairing I left Carrick and Gardiner together because this year they have been excellent in terms of corsi-for %. The "third" pairing, which is more like another second pairing is the analytics -darling Marincin with the offensive yet two-way Zaitsev. The final move I made is signing Jonathan Bernier. I think he'd be an excellent back-up to Andersen, and it'd be nice for him to win a cup with us.

If Shattenkirk signs for 7+ mil than whoever does that is an idiot

Even 6.5m I'm not really comfortable with

I know the player gets what the market gives, but lets hope that no GM does that
There is only 5 defenseman in the league that make over 7

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Shattenkirk is a left shot defenceman not right and Babcock likes to leave them on their proper side and we already have Reilly and Gardiner there, so the only way you can justify signing him is moving one of the other two for a right shot defenceman. And I agree with the first two posts; I believe he'll get 7+ million and be too rich so the Leafs pass. Second Bozak and JVR together are not anecessarily overly good combination. The only time they have ever done well together is with Kessel and Marner, both of whom are exellent at driving the offensive play, so they would collapse with Hyman because he struggles offensively. And I wouldn't keep both players going into contract years; deal them for younger talent with team control left and continue building, the team will be talented enough to win without them, assuming we get defensive help.

Shattenkirk does have stellar offensive numbers but that doesn't necessarily make him a top 10 or 20 Dman in the league. I'm a Leaf optimist but a Shattenkirk and back up goalie don't Leafs a Cup contender spring of 2018.
Let the Rangers or Bruins blow their brains out with Shattenkirk. There will be plenty of deals out there next year to upgrade the defence.

Look at his advanced numbers on corsica.com. He's a two-way beast.

His possession numbers are likely inflated due to the fact he isn't getting the hard match ups I imagine being on the Blues second pairing

I like all the work you put into this and I like the effort. Shattenkirk might be great, but I'm just unsure it would happen. It's all about choice and obviously you can't take that into account here, so otherwise I think it's alright for payment to him and I think Gauthier on a fourth line role is a good move for the Leafs. Bernier as a backup I'm unsure about but I've seen worse here. Good job
