Deadline trade with Columbus

Created by: Richard88
Team: 2020-21 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 28, 2021
Published: Feb. 28, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Columbus are in freefall, going 0-4-1 in their last 5 and having won just 1 of their last 8, including 3 losses to each of Nashville and Chicago.

They also have 1-2 forwards and 1 Dman too many to protect for the expansion draft, so it would probably make sense to move Savard and a forward at the deadline.

- Laine, Bjorkstrand, Atkinson, Nyquist, Jenner, Domi, Roslovic, Foligno (UFA), Nash (UFA)
- Jones, Werenski, Gavrikov, Savard (UFA)
- Korpisalo, Kivlenieks
Trades
COL
  1. Jenner, Boone
  2. Savard, David ($2,125,000 retained)
Additional Details:

(*Pateryn's non-NHL caphit)
CBJ
  1. Compher, J.T.
  2. Pateryn, Greg
  3. Timmins, Conor
  4. 2021 1st round pick (COL)

Overpay. Savard will likely be a rental so his value isn't at its highest.

Timmins alone is worth more than Savard and then I don't believe I should have to explain why Pateryn, Compher and a 1st is a pretty big overpay for Jenner

Agree, it's too much. Jenner would be a nice add but no need to overcomplicate it with Savard.

You might be right, but I tried looking at it from Columbus' perspective. They won't be short of offers for both Savard and Jenner at the deadline, and combining the retention; Pateryn cap dump; and the fact that Compher is a bit overpaid in this market for 2 more years and that his salary jumps to $4.5m next season, I think Avs may need to overpay slightly to get this done.

Happy to be wrong about that though if Avs can get Savard and Jenner cheaper! grin

I think there is no chance your getting our first rounder for a few reasons. After loss of Dubois and Anderson we are goIng through some growing pains. Not full rebuild but retooling, lot of new pieces. Roslovic, Laine, and Domi still raw in our system and need a full normal offseason to find chemistry. With expansion draft coming, our need to restock the prospect pool, and CBJ being a small market team that builds through draft our front office will not let our 1st rd pick go easily. Boone Jenner is possibly the future captain of our team and one of the few veteran presence type players we have on a very young team, especially if we opt not to resign our current captain Foligno who is set to go FA as it stands now. I know he’s happy in Columbus and is valued in our lockeroom, so this complicates Jenner’s real value to us versus outside perception.

Why are you talking about CBJ's 1st? It's not in the trade...

The trade only involves Colorado's 1st going to Columbus.

You are correct sir i misread, my mistake, thumbs up for pointing that out to me and sorry about that. Anyway i hope i shed some light on what the perspective in Columbus would be, especially regarding Boone Jenner. COL is often used here as short hand for Columbus so for whatever reason i saw that and started thinking it was being sent the other way

I actually like this deal except for the length on Compher's contract. We need cap for Jones, Werenski, Laine, Korpi/Elvis, Roslovic, maybe Domi in 2 years so 3 yearsx3.5 from Compher cuts into that.
