Ekholm's defensive game has regressed severely in the past two seasons. Contending teams shouldn't be giving up assets for him unless they expect him to play on the third pairing. Calgary trade loses credibility because of the addition of Mangiapane.

Ekholm hasn't gotten any worse. The problem is he's playing with Fabbro. Fabbro still can be a good top 4 defenseman in the NHL. He just isn't ready yet. I don't think it's fair to put the blame on Ekholm though.

Considering production/salary/contract length, what is the difference between gaudreau and koneckny or Lindblom and Mangiapane?

Ekholm is a good defensive dman, but does he fetch frost AND zamula in that package?
