Description

Hawks likely have both Seabrook and Shaw on LTIR in 2021-22, but to utilize that cap space need to get as close as possible to the cap before they go on LTIR. A trade like this does it.
Trading Loui gives the Canucks cap flexibility they don't have now and will need for Pettersson and Quinn, and under this scenario it doesn't cost them much. Eriksson is off the Hawks' books before they face their own crunch in 22-23. Assume trade happens just before draft; if the difference in draft picks is too close (currently 9), Vancouver could offer a player (Lind? Podkolzin? Woo?)

What is Chicago’s goal next year?

If they are looking to remain competitive just do what STL did with Hoffman for one or two players. Cap will be tight again and a couple of good players will be available late.

Exactly, Blues, Lightning and Leafs are all examples over the last couple years that managed LTIR just fine while acquiring or re-signing talent in the offseason and leading up to the first day of the season when they can activate LTIR
