Let's play a game. You have to guess five players, based on this graph:

somethingincommon.png

The only information you're provided is their cumulative points per game (shown above), as well as this hint: they all have two things in common.

Correspond to the number of completed seasons.

The chart shows cumulative points per game over a period of seasons. See if you match Connor McDavid's cumulative points per game to a line on a chart. If not, one is not Connor McDavid.

So they’ve all played 10 seasons, none of them have gone over a point per game pace, and 2 of them have been good forever, and they share 2 things in common probably draft year and position

Edit: To have played 10 seasons not counting this one you’d have to have been drafted around max 2009-2010/played your first game

Think you should double check this. You're on the right track.

Just asking to confirm - is it fair to assume that all of these 5 players started the same year? Like the guy with a tad less than a PPG of 0,8 on his first year started the same year as the guy who apparently didn't score at all during the first two years of his career?

And naturally that the timespan is same for everyone? Not like that the red one played for the seasons 2007-08 to 2017-18 in this example, and the green one played in 2004-05 to 2014-15 respectively.

The "1" is the same calendar year for all five players. A_Habs_Fan had the right idea.

EDIT: To make it a bit earlier, the x axis is Seasons.

Was that clear? I'm not trying to make this more difficult but I don't want to give away too much.

X-axis corresponds to a season (ie the "2" might be the 2003-04 season and that would be the 2003-04 season for all the players).

Yeah I think I got it. That 10-season timeframe is similar for all players mentioned here. The year 1 (2005 for example) is same, the year 10 (2015 for example) is same?

Was that it?

Yes.

I'm updating the image because I thought I was being clever by not labelling the bottom axis. Hope it's much more clear.

Are the years in the image also accurate? Or are they there just to set an example

It's points per game over time.

Ie,

Each season is their total career points up to and including that season / total career games up to and include that season.

Another hint: Two of these players currently play on the same team. The worse of the two makes more money than the other.

Oh f*ck it I'm done. That Blue one is f*cking me up. Can only find few players who would've been in the threshold of 0.75-0.8 points in 2010-11 and still played last year - Kessel, Stastny, Skinner, Backes and Williams. And not a single one of them had a PPG over 0.6 in 2019-20, as is shown in the chart.

Congrats on making a challenge too hard for me. I'm folding by now lol.

I believe the best place to start is the green player b/c we have more information on him than any other player: His 1st season was in 2013-14 (or at least we know that he wasn't playing in the NHL in the prior 3 seasons). Of those players that debuted in '13-'14, the following rookies scored at a about a .35 p/pg pace: Elias Lindholm, Filip Forsberg, Brock Nelson, and Morgan Rielly. A few others scored at this pace, but none have scored at at least a .70 p/pg pace over the last 6 seasons, besides Kucherov and he scored far more.

Hopefully, I'm on the right track. I will pick up from here tomorrow!
