I rather see Bowman try to improve the team in free agency. This team has a lot of money and is trending upwards. There's a lot of promise in Chicago to free agents.

Flames have only 12 players signed for next year

This team isnt a free agent away from contending. Improving through the draft is the only way to get back on track to get the most out of Kane. Getting picks would do a lot more for this team than you are realizing.

That's a lot of draft picks, to go with an already decent roster. And there's still room to sign a 4M UFA over the summer, short term. Even before the expansion draft hopefully clears more cap space. Wow.

My concern would be that if any of their injured guys get healthy, they end up a good deal over the upper limit. And I"m not sure how that works in the summer: can guys stay on LTIR year round, or do they come off and go back on for a moment?

What is that Oilers trade. 1st, 2nd and 3rd to save 1 million bucks. Never. Ridiculous 1.9 million minus another NHL player is 1 million bucks.

Losing murphy or DeHaan in the expansion draft already clears enough cap for when Toews comes back. There is nobody deserving a major raise in the next 3 years.

That means unless the Flames add 11 ELC contract/leauge minimum players they wont afford to even ice their team and something has to give.

Neals cap hit is 5.7 million Oilers have 20 million to sign 12 players (and that includes RNH and Yammamotto, to re-sign) Oilers get rid of an awful contract 2 years early, get space to make their team better.

What are you talking about, they can just buy him out for 1.9 million. And if they have that much cap space like above then why get rid of great assets for 1.9 million. Bad management.

This team isn't bad, and they have all that cap space. Realistically, they could sign two or three good free agents.

You should probably look at their cap and try again. Lets pretend the Flames get a good free agent (6 or so million) that leaves them with only 9 million to make a full 23 man roster when they have to have 10 more players to add. Thats also not even factoring in how Calgary still has players to re-sign so no Calgary does have to free up space especially when the cap is going to be stuck at 81.5 million the next 3 seasons.

If the Oilers want to have a 2 million penalty for 4 years while they need every dollar possible to make an actual contending team around McDavid then go ahead lol

Yeah because you just spent $25M to acquire awful contracts, which actually hurts the hawks cap situation more than signing 2-3 decent free agents at 3-4M each. Draft picks are always nice, but I rather them sell Janmark, Soderberg, Zadorov at the deadline instead of this, but I don't think that's realistic either. This team is probably making the playoffs. Hawks don't need all those picks. They're not rebuilding.
