Sabres could have had Gardiner for free when they put him on waivers. Why would they do this?

I could see a bigger deal involving RIsto for Gardiner + Bean in some form of that. Picks or prospects to balance out

Makes no sense for the Sabres to take on 2 more years of Gardiner for Staal.

Staal for a 4th and call it done, and add what you need for Mountour while you’re at it.

Sabres want picks or prospects. Gardiner doesn't really do anything for us. Could've just picked him off waivers.

Sabres want a 3rd for Staal; we aren't just going to give players away. We have zero interest in Gardiner, you'd need a 1st to get a team to take on his contract.....
