The Oilers might give you a first for him. They need the help. No one else will though.

I mean not really cause the cap wouldn’t work at all short term or long term. We’ve got.way too many guys to resign.

You've got $9 million coming off the books from Smith and Shattenkirk alone. Include Strome in the trade and you're fine.

Not recognizing how much it’ll cost to resign all the rfa’s over the next 2-3 years. Fox alone will probably cost $7 mil plus on a long term deal, then there’s Shesty, Chytil, Lindgren, Buch, Kakko, Laf, Miller and Mika. It adds up and with a flat cap I don’t know if I want another $10 mil player on the team even if they’re as good as Eichel.

If these last few games are any indication, the Rangers no longer need Eichel.

Lafreniere doesn't come up for renewal until 2023 and Miller until 2024, so you can discount their effect.

It's hard to see how you will be over $77 million for next season, assuming that you give Buchnevich about $5 million and Shesterkin $5.5 million (forwards $50 million including Eichel, defense $15 million, goalies $8 million, and $4 million in dead money). So the main problem is 2022-2023, when you'll have Z, Fox and Kappo up and only about $6 million in cap space initially. But Tampa Bay hasn’t had any difficulty navigating the shoals of the cap despite all the prognostications of doom over the past two years or looming over next season. So saying you’d reject Jack Eichel because you’re afraid of what adjustments you MIGHT have to make two years down the road is like saying you wouldn’t marry Salma Hayek because of her accent.

Yes you’re correct. I’d rather not add Eichel if I have to destroy the solid core because of the cap. Fox alone will cost more than $7 mil on a long term deal which is more than the entire projected cap space you mentioned. Figuring it out later won’t work in our case. Plus I’d rather draft and develop a center than trade for one who has only seen losing in his entire 6 years in the league. Eichel does not mean playoffs for us. So no way I’d pay that much for him.

One of the worst contracts in the NHL . . . If the Leafs had to pay 1st to get rid of $6m of Patrick Marleau for 1 season, then I don't see why this is an overpay for several years of OEL.
