Fair. Fleury for Stecher does have some advantages for Detroit, though. First, Fleury will be an RFA in 1 and a half seasons while Stecher will be a UFA in 1 and a half seasons. This means that if Fleury takes the next step in Detroit, there's a good chance that he could be locked in long-term to a good-value extension. It's important to note that Fleury's played well this month, and just hasn't been very lucky offensively.

I don't think this really makes sense at all. If Fletcher makes a panic move, it'll be a massive overpay for a defenseman who isn't worth as much as what he sending. The last thing he'd do in panic mode to fix the defense is trade the best defenseman on the roster

Ah, you see, though, historically there has been such a thing as a scapegoat effect. Obviously, this is not a serious proposal, but when teams have bad defensive years, it's often common for the best guy to get the blame.

That's a fair enough arguement. Having said that, trading Provorov would be blatantly stupid enough that I can't even imagine a hypothetical where he would be the man out. I do think however that could be the logic behind moving one of Sanheim or Myers

This move, however, would certainly cement Carolina as the best defense in hockey. The argument could be made for that right now, though IMO Colorado and Carolina both have strong cases for said distinction due to the huge coup that Colorado pulled off in getting Toews for only 2 seconds. A Provorov-Pesce second pair, however, would make it a no-doubter.

And then Fletcher would be fired and enjoy unemployment alongside Peter Chiarelli

Right. Obviously this is a cynical deal on my end. I will say, though, that unexpectedly bad seasons are often motivation for some of the worst non-cap dump trades in NHL history.

Not wrong but this is a bit severe. If anything Fletcher panics and moves a forward like Konecny for defensive help. They have plenty of forwards knocking on the door where it would at least be justified to move him.

I'm sure Carolina would love them some Konecny [naughty grin ensues]. My only concern on such a trade is if owners start to shadow-ban GMs from trading with our FO. Which would be a damned shame, because Carolina prospects have historically had a very good track record of becoming full-time NHL role players for other organizations. Not our fault that NHL GMs are sometimes panic-stricken morons.

Talking about Provorov, not Fleury or Stecher! I will say, though, that Fleury's much better than his stats appear to be. Great skater for his size.
