I too have wondered this. Not this exact trade of course but what can an entire draft from a team get you in terms of value back? Obviously the team finishing last will have the best picks but what about 15th or 30th ? What could 7 draft picks rounds 1 through 7 get you?

I feel teams with a healthy amount of good prospects already could absolutely go for something like this.

You may get one of those players for that package.

I disagree! I don't think you could get any one of them for that package.

      1. None of those players by themselves are worth that package.
      2. Giving up an entire draft would be crippling.

Watty take a second to actually think about what that trade entails if it was for Mackinnon for example........

Would you do Nathan Mackinnon for:

      Gudbranson? Yes.
      Gudbranson + 1st? Yes
      Gudbranson + 1st + 2nd? Yes!

Adding picks after this is peanuts. Who cares!! You're getting an young elite star player for potentially nothing. There is more chance that all those draft picks don't turn into anything special in the NHL than one of them actually turning into a star player! You can replace your entire draft class by undrafted players, young free agents and waiver claims. Yeah you're rebuilding but your getting a player who is young and probably better than anyone of the picks will turn out to be.

I would give all of the Habs draft picks this year for anyone of those players any day of the week and that includes the extra 2nd rounder we received!

My gut reaction for F50 was pshh, no way! However, I went to look at my team because I could think of lower picks that have value and I learned that even when the lower pick is pretty good like a 5th for Andrew shaw...the draft class as a whole still wouldn't be worth MacKinnon. Now factor in other players like vesey and Mike Reilly and Kevin Hayes....OR even yet Artemi Panarin and Radulov. If you can get the studs, there is probably a greater likelyhood that yoy can get players in other ways. It's worth a thought...especially for a winning team.

I disagree. MacKinnon is a stud and 21. You don't know what a first round pick from the Canucks will give you. If people are projecting the top end of this draft to be nowhere near as good as the last two years is it really worth giving up an absolute #1C for the possibility of rebuilding a team with a number 3-4 D-man and let's say the #12, #43 and more picks for, I would say no. You can have a bit more of an argument for Duchene and Landy but I would demand a guy like tanev or even juolevi tho even he is unproven and the last eye test of him was WJC so it may not leave a good taste in their mouthes to make that deal either.

So based on the idea that Vancouver is contending for a playoff spot these picks would be in the 14-20 range of each wrong. So.... the Avs leading scorer, new face of the franchise, and a 1st overall from just 3 years ago for middling picks in each round? You've got to be joking. This is an absolute FARCE of a trade proposal.

No to be honest. Its a bad draft year and trading Top 6 NHL fwds for you find 1 equal or better than the guy you re giving up....thats just hopes and prayers kind of stuff. Gudbranson doesnt soften the risk and if he was a legit Top 4dman why would you trade him?
Why would any team do that...

Its a gambling game. Obviously some teams strike gold with 7th rounders sometimes but look at the odds of it happening......... I would trade any of Chicago's last entire drafts since Patty Kane in 07 for Mackinnon without even blinking. Frankly I'd do it for either Duchene or Landeskog as well. The only draft that is somewhat a winner overall was 2011 with Saad and Shaw but even then, i'm not sure I still wouldn't do it. Now I know hindsight is 20/20 but on average any team that has been at the very least not a perennial bottom dweller, based off averages, should trade an entire draft if necessary to acquire a sure thing.

Draft picks mean nothing if those players aren't developed or stay with the team. I think people just like the idea of having them but once the players are drafted and their real potential is now visible, I'd venture to say 80% of your draft picks never play more then 100 games in the NHL in their career. Out of 5 years, one may turn into a star player. Obviously you have to take the league as a whole on average and not just cherry pick 1 or 2 teams. Not to mention top 5 picks have become pretty much sure things nowadays so those are not the norm.

I think a few teams could handle giving up an entire draft, if that team was in 15th or higher, they are good at attracting Vesey type of college UFA's, and already have a quality farm system. After the 3rd round draft picks are really crap shoots anyways.
