Still able to push for Playoffs

Description
JVR is by far the best play inthis deal. And it gives the Ducks an upgrade on the LW for the run this year and next. moving Ritchie could hurt them long term but they need to rebuild this team LT unless getzlaf and perry will play into there late 30s. Trading Leipsic for jones gives them a piece that is closer to contributing now as he is dominating the A and deserves an NHL shot. Jones and Leipsic both don't look like top line player either in there futures. Montour for Dermott gives the Ducks a good D prospect who is younger. This move is allowing the Ducks to trade a strength (they have lots of young D) for a younger one down the road. Leafs take on stoners contract with term which is big for the Ducks and leafs Add Rychel who is a Depth player with skill and a Hard nosed game to fill in the bottom six. Toronto adds a 2nd if Rychel or Leipsic get taken in the expansion draft.

Leipsic, dominating the AHL? Look at the leading point getters in the AHL, many of former NHLers who aren't NHL good, for whatever reason. Leipsic and Rychel would be on the Leafs if they were NHL good.
Now you can argue the merits of the trade, but to think 3rd and 4th year AHLers are really NHL value in trade, probably not.

Doing this would be awful for the Leafs. Ritchie and Jones are the only benefits that they get from this trade. And it certaintly isn't worth all of that.

That's funny cause Montour looks like he's going to play on one of the best defences in the League next year and improve it.

That being said Anahiem says no. They already have a problem with the expansion draft and this causes more issues than it solves.

I do agree about the expansion draft issue. Mostly with JVR as Leipsic and Rychel probably won't get taken over silverberg.
And Pal, there is no room on this team on the wings for either Leipsic or Rychel. I don't think Rychel will be much in the NHL but Leipsic could be a decent 3rd line scoring winger. He's still young and not a bust of a prospect at all. I'm not saying every player who contributes in the AHL will in the NHL but if you have never had a chance to play then you won't know yet. Others in the AHL ahead of him in the AHL have had a chance and didn't make it (for whatever reason).

Matty: You may be right there is no room on the Leafs for Leipsic and Rychel. But have you seen much of Leipsic and his play in the AHL? Leafs aren't holding back Leipsic and bring Soshnikov, Smith, Gauthier ahead of Leipsic and Rychel for reasons. He isn't NHL good in the eyes of the Leaf management.
Every AHL team has guys that their fan base loves and to think a four year pro that didn't get his chance in Nashville and now the Leafs will suddenly transform into a NHL good winger?....defies the odds. And as result as virtually zero trading value.

Honestly, I've read reports where it's only a matter of when not if Lepsic is playing for the leafs. The reason Lepsic and Kapanen have not been called up is due to the they are learning how to be complete players and are on the top PK for the Marlies to develop that skill. I also think that the leafs have not been rittled with injuries this year and no one has played poorly enough to give them playing time in ACC. Also, they are going off the philosophy of not getting too young too quickly. Lepsic and Kapanen could depending on what the leafs due this offseason be on the roster.

hockeymad: Kapanen is 20 years old and you're right he is playing with the Marlies bigger minutes instead of 3rd or 4th line minutes with the Leafs. I imagine the Leafs are hoping that Kapanen turns into good NHLer (good possibility) and Nylander can move to centre and be a star...If you're a Leaf.....Matthew, Nylander and Kadri at centre. Marner, Kapanen, Brown at RW. On the PP you could put out 3 or 4 of those guys at a time, that good be a winning lineup. Leipsic, I guess we can have this discussion in 10 years. I still say after watching him and what I think the Leafs know of him, and after being a pro for 3.5 years....he isn't NHL good.
If the Leafs have Swedish Grundstrom? and the kid from the Quebec League Dszertis? both left wingers joining the Marlies next year and maybe Nelson and Brooks playing wing, I don't if there's room for Rychel and Leipsic are in the Leaf organization. Good luck to them though in being NHLers.
