My ideal offseason

Created by: AdnacOil
Team: 2021-22 Edmonton Oilers

Description
I'm throwing ideas out there for how I'd want this offseason to go. The trade values aren't going to be exact, and other teams may not be interested in the trades I make, but it's the general concept I'm trying to get behind.

Oilers finlly have a legit number 1 D after how many years since Pronger and you want to trade him. Seriously???

The general concept I see is that you aren't trying to make the team better.

Klefbom's status is a monstrous unknown and it's commonly speculated that he'll miss until November at a minimum and could be out until the New Year. I want to know why you're in the market for trading a defencemen who's emerged as a top-pairing guy in the NHL when we have this unknown. There is no certainty that Klefbom returns or how good he'll be when he returns. Nurse should be here for a long time and is looking more and more like the Pronger-lite he was billed as during draft day. He'll be worth his next contract and holds far too much value for the Oilers to move on from him.

Bouchard's emergence on this roster makes Benning unnecessary. I take tremendous pause with him getting another concussion this year. I'd much rather bring back Larsson for 2 or 3 years than a bottom-pairing name that isn't pushing the bill. There's a lot of puck movers on this back end but nobody that's notably proficient at being excellent in their own zone beyond Bear, maybe Kulikov.

Fleury won't be traded to a division rival and Holland isn't going to move on from the first contract he signed for the team after an injury-riddled season for Kassian. He'll be an Oiler next year.

Your bottom six is trash. Benson might carve out a career as a more offensively-gifted 4th line player who can PK but I doubt Marody has any NHL future beyond being a spare forward. Pat Russell is not an NHL player: there's nothing he can do beyond PK at this level. I'd much rather have Archibald who can at least be rotated up and down the lineup. Likewise, Eriksson hasn't been a viable NHL option in like 2 years now. If Edmonton acquires him, it's to bury him in the minors and take a draft asset, not to play him. While you have him as the #7, Kris Russell is also no longer an NHL option. Bring someone in on a league-minimum deal to be a spare instead. The more you take Tippett's toys away from him the more likely it is he optimizes the roster.

My preference is Ullmark over Dreidger: I'm kind of done with Edmonton banking on goalies with less than a total season experience to be their starter and would prefer they invest in something more proven.

Klefbomb is not a legit 1 D, maybe 2 or 3 D

So let me get this right:

Your ideal offseason includes trading your best defenseman and taking on a bunch of bad contracts?? Just when we thought this team was ready to be a legit contender!

Nurse has played ahead of Klefbom for 4 years now, since he was 22. Klefbom is also not going to be as good as he was coming off an 18+ month layoff - if he ever comes back. Your D corps is going to leak GA like crazy, your bottom-6 is trash and you have $15M in goaltenders when only 1 guy can play at a time!

So my dcore is supposedly going to leak GA like crazy. Your solution is Darnell Nurse? He's 2nd worst in GA/60 for Oilers dmen in the last 2 seasons (2nd to Barrie). Hmmm

Ok so let me understand this. I’m going to skip past the nurse thing because that’s extremely unlikely but at least worth having conversation about. You buy out Neal then use that cap space to help a division rival? I’d keep Neal all day long before doing that. Not bringing larsson back I think that’s suicidal for the blueline he’s been the glue holding a lot of it together. Benning I loved the guy it’s hard not to just like Davidson they busted their butts off and as fans we generally showed our appreciation but reality needs to settle in they were sheltered third pairing type of guys who had to bust their butts and give it absolutely everything for a hope of playing time. We are suppose to be in a contending window can’t do that if letting quality like larsson walk then spend assets on bringing back benning that’s 6 steps backwards.

He's the guy successive NHL coaches have relied on the most to go up against the opposition's best players. I do trust their judgement over yours.

I wasn't make a judgement, I was providing evidence. You said my dcore is going to leak GA. I countered with Darnell Nurse being on the ice for the 2nd most GA per 60 minutes.

Careful reading stats like that your not taking into account he plays 25-30 minutes a night against the toughest competition. Along with Barrie both of them easily provide a lot more positives than negatives.

Per PuckIQ, Nurse still has the 2nd worst GA/60 among Oilers defensemen against elite competition.

Barrie: 3.8 GA/60
Nurse: 3.0
Lagesson: 2.6
Larsson: 2.0
Bear: 1.7
Russell: 1.6
Bouchard: 1.4
Caleb Jones: 1.1

That's why I use SKATR charts primarily that factor in full context but... they show that Nurse gets only slightly tougher deployment so maybe a small factor

Nurse also plays disproportionately with McDavid ✔

Not too tough all told

Makes me wonder what a Bouchard/Jones pair could do in a fairly tough role 👀 I imagine it'd at least be pretty cool and it'd be sad to see them Seattle CJ

The alternative is giving Nurse $7M-$8M when his stats were zoomed by McDavid all season.

It amazes me how much this fanbase hasn't learned from the Kassian contract.

So the alternative would be to let go of everyone who has success with mcdavid?

It's to stop overrating players that have had success with McDavid.

Well I personally don’t buy into that train of thought. Keep replacing anyone good and keep those who suck?

Good with McDavid perhaps.

Nurse without McDavid has been brutal this season. Almost at a 40% goal share.
