How to become a cup contender as legit as possible

Created by: marplesn
Team: 2021-22 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: May 28, 2021
Published: May 28, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Couple of things to note:
1) Klefbomb (and probably kassian) would be traded after this season and replaced with Broberg, the oilers need the cap to resign some players.
2) Koskinen also could be bought out instead of in the Columbus deal, which gives the team more cap space to work with this year but less next year. I was just trying to avoid adding on to the cap hell I already know I created.
3) Kharia instead of Glendening I like too, I just was trying to be realistic and Holland wants his RHC and of course Glendening played for him in Detroit so I made that work.

  1. 2021 3rd round pick (SEA)
Additional Details:
We get back a 3rd (maybe a 2nd) because that first is a lot with those players and the Oilers don't have a 2nd or a 3rd to get this deal done
SEA
  1. Lagesson, William
  2. Marody, Cooper [RFA Rights]
  3. Neal, James
  4. 2021 1st round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Trade Neal (full contract) plus Marody and a 1st to Seattle (who select Lagesson)
2.
EDM
  1. Merzlikins, Elvis
Additional Details:
Elvis is our starter, Smith backs him up.
CBJ
  1. Koskinen, Mikko ($1,000,000 retained)
  2. Samorukov, Dmitri
  3. 2022 1st round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
A plethora of LHD, mkaing Samruokov is expendable. Willing to retain 1 mil of koski's salary because it is better than buying him out.

Pick is a conditional 1st, he has to play 50% of games else oilers send a 2nd instead.

would be better to use those 1sts to gain assets to make the team better not use as a vehicle to move out bad contracts inefficiently

Nuge is not going to take a cheaper contract than his last one

This year is a weak draft, and the other first-rounder is gaining an asset. Elvis is a legit starter. Koski won't be that hard to move on the same contract for 1 year to a struggling team. He's basically money to make the deal work.

Even if he makes 750k more the team still works. This has 2 mil in cap space and nuge apparently wanted 6.5 at the start of the season.

Would just like to point out that this does mean Klefbomb is traded or Nurse walks at the end of the season (Puljujarvi, Bear, and Jones all need contracts)... either is replaced by Broberg and I think the team is still fine.

Hyman is an awesome player, but to get him to leave Toronto you probably need to offer at least 6-7 million.
He isn't leaving Toronto for 5.5, Leafs would match or offer an extra year.

itd be better to use the 1sts more effectively still. using a first to dump a players almost never plays out well. better to use 2021 1st to grab a goalie and then keep 2022 first. there are better ways to lose cap. also mikko is barely an nhl goalie and with korpisalo being arguably the worst goalie in theleague last year Im sure they would not be comfortable having a koski & korpisalo tandem with a leaky defence. most likley koskinen gets boughtout or stays till expiry and nealgets burried till a buyout next year. it would cost us tomortage as majorpart of ourpipline to get anybody to take neal. Also thelackof cap management heremeans that klef or nurseare gone cause there isnt enough money left

Nuge aint taking that low of a contract
Gledening is terrible
Goalies are far too random to spend a 1st round pick in a stacked draft on

Tatar also is a viable option for 1LW, he's acting like he knows his time in MTL is up. Hyman is just my #1 choice. I think there are 2 or 3 different players that also could work in that spot for around the same or less money

Nuge wanted 6.5 at the start of the season (I don't care if they even pay him that this team has 2 mil in cap)
Kharia instead of Glendening is fine too
Elvis is 100% worth it and at some point, the oilers need to stop thinking about the future and give McDavid and Draisital a team to win now.

Neal will sell jerseys in Seattle, its the same reason vegas took him. I think they would stomach that deal for a couple of pretty damn good prospects and a 1st. Oilers cant just keep thinking about the future and let mcdavid and draisital waste away because they hope a 22nd overall pick turns out in 3-4 years.

No to any Merzlikins trade unless we're getting overpaid - he's our starter and expansion exempt, so he's particularly valuable to us.
No to anything that involves us taking back Koskinen unless the bribery is absurd.

That's fair, I wasn't sure about the Elvis price but honestly, Samrukov is gonna be a legit dman. From what I had seen, it seemed like they decided Korpi was the starter and Elvis sounded like he wanted out when asked how he liked sharing the net with Korpi. Koskinen also can just be bought out, although I don't understand why every fan seems to hate him when his numbers are decent as a backup, on a 1 yr deal, and retained.

im saying use that first rounder for an asset that can be used now instead of using it to dump a guy that in a year can easily be bought out and can stay this year buried. the oil could (for example) easily use the 1st rounder to say get a mid round pick and a much needed 3C or get a goalie instead of burning 2 years worth of firsts. firsts are incredibly valuable because they can be used to get strong assets for the short term relatively easily. theres a reason tampa kept their firsts until deadlines. because that when you get the most out of them when youre wanting to make a push and can snag someone of value from a seller.

And the notion that neal would be selling jerseys is quite ridiculous. He was the biggest skater name to go in the vegas expansion. he wouldn't even be mentioned cause he barely would make the roster. the guy hasnt had a 20 goal season in 3 years and is 33 and not fast enough for todays game

that trad isn't about future its about getting value for ur picks and in that trade u don't get any good value.
