Hard pass on the Oilers giving up Yamamoto except for something that its a true improvement. Although he struggled this year, no way he signs a 3x $1mil.

That trade is horrible for the oilers, and Cedric Paquette doesn’t fit on our team as we have tons of 4cs. Jujhar Khaira, Geaton Haas, Ryan McLeod, etc. Also, Brock McGinn is a UFA, so trading for his rights doesn’t make sense.

Gardiner won't be dumped, it's likely we see him in game 2 of the Lightning series because he provides an experienced alternative to Bean who's struggled mightily.

Red Wings take this deal and run. Jake Gardiner may be slightly overpaid, but he's still an upgrade on the Wings blue line. With two years remaining, we could easily flip him for more assets at next year's deadline or in '23. Bokk is a good prospect that looks to be a future middle six (at worst) winger. He's also a fellow German, and had great chemistry with Seider at the U20's. Two of those pieces alone would be enough. Add a 2nd round pick and it's a major win for Detroit. And you want ANOTHER 2nd round pick on top of it? No way...

No they don't, Gardner doesn't for their rebuild timeline. Look at every deal Yzerman has done. Gardner is a cap dump for them, any player they get is probably going to be an upgrade. They still say no, this isn't yzermans philosophy at all. It's a big cap dump and they said no to deals when it doesn't work for them, just cause you think it works and helps Carolina cool, but for wings and yzerman for a 2nd and bokk pass

Staal fit the Red Wings timeline, but Gardiner doesn't? LOL. Yzerman made the Staal trade last offseasoni, and it was a damn good one. Staal is 4 years older than Gardiner, $1.65M more (one less year), and a worse player at this stage in his career. Staal garnered a 2nd round pick. But You think Gardiner should garner TWO 2nd round picks AND a quality prospect? Not going to happen. By the way, I'm a Wings fan, not a Canes fan...

Staal didn't fit their time line and got 1 2nd for his contract. Gardner has 2 so you double it for 2 years. The prospect is for taking on multiple years as well. Gardner is a defensive liability and his offense isn't even that good, he's a plug for 2 years when we could start playing our kids. I'm fine with saying no to Carolina and letting them Keep him if they don't want to meet the price. If we don't get it bye. Flat cap for 5 years, Carolina needs the money elsewhere, they are going for it now and those picks mean squat to them. Lowest I'd go is 2+3+bokk but that's it

Gardiner is a better player, and costs less. You don't get significantly more of a return for that. Plain and simple. You're also undervaluing Bokk in this trade, who is a very good prospect. You may want those three pieces, but zero chance you get them. The proposed trade by the OP is much more fair for both sides.

Yeah, Yzerman would definitely turn down the opportunity to add a 2nd round pick AND a very good prospect for two years of Jake Gardiner. He'd much rather sign another similar player in free agency (he will sign a defenseman in free agency), and get nothing in return... smirk

He would just want more in a flat cap world where teams are up against the cap and would take advantage of it. Also with expansion draft

Yeah, because that's how trades work... Just because you want more, doesn't mean you'll get more. You take what you can get, and in this case, this would be a great trade for Detroit, taking on just two years of Gardiner. We could then flip him (50% retained) at the '23 trade deadline for that extra 2nd that you so badly want...

Pre-Covid, Gardiner isn't even a cap dump, but "in a flat cap world where teams are up against the cap", a 2nd round pick and a high end prospect is an absolute steal to take on two years of a capable defenseman like Gardiner. But no, we don't want your free assets, because "Gardiner doesn't fit the timeline"... Confused

What's "Yzerman not you"? Did you ask Yzerman? Yzerman would take this deal without thinking twice.

Gardiner doesn’t cost less than Staal. Staal was paid 3.2M from Detroit & Gardiner is owed 4.2M & 4.45M. There is also the question of how Gardiner’s back is going to hold up & if his contract is insured. I’d be good with the return personally.

I was speaking per season cap dollars, not overall real dollars. After all, that's what generally dictates market value.
But yes, the return would be great for the Red Wings. For anyone that liked the return on the Staal trade, should love the return on this proposed trade.

Real actual dollars is a heavy indicator of trade value for some/most teams. We can look at Ottawa’s cap dump deals which involved a significantly lower cash vs AAV. We can also look to deals like ROR which were put through before his significant signing bonus was due. AAV determines who can take on a player without having to move another or possibly causing implications with future RFA/UFAs. We’ve recently seen teams like Detroit buy out contracts like Abdelkader which they didn’t need the cap but ultimately saved them in cash and that’s a team that profits a decent amount (~32M) even as a rebuilder. Teams like Detroit/NJ that are going to have massive amounts of cap space this offseason aren’t asking how much cap will be eaten by a deal but rather how long and how much real cash to buy X asset(s).

You're comparing the Detroit Red Wings (Chris Ilitch), a team (owner) more than willing to spend money to improve the team, to the Ottawa Senators (Eugene Melnyk), a team (owner) that trades away good players when they're up for a big raise to save money. I'm not sure what bonuses and buy-outs have to do with anything here... The specific examples you're bringing up have nothing to do with this particular trade scenario.
The Red Wings have the cap space to acquire cap dumps, but they're not going to take on significant term. Two year's of a player like Jake Gardiner is exactly the type of trade Yzerman should be looking to make. And the proposed trade was about right value wise in my opinion.

You implied cash doesn’t effect trade value, I provided three recent examples from three different GMs where it effected trade value. We also can’t say Chris Illitch is willing to open his wallet like his father. I also didn’t directly compare the two owners but stated factual events that have happened to backup my comment.

I also agreed about the value in this trade request but merely pointed out how your statement was exactly true. You then replied saying what you meant (AAV vs cash) but then again said cash wasn’t a major factor. Multiple users on this site have said this but yet haven’t pointed to a single quote or action by a GM to back up this speculation. There’s been multiple actions and quotes from GMs or former GMs that essentially backup my comment.

I thought it was clear I was speaking on this particular trade scenario, not a broad statement about trades in general. The cash vs cap doesn't matter much in the Staal or proposed Gardiner trade. Regardless, the value is fair, which we agree on. Gardiner for a 2nd round pick and Bokk would be great value for the Red Wings (owner, general manager, coach, players, fans)...

Yes, we are in agreement in the value is more than enough in OP’s offer. What we disagree on is this statement of yours “The cash vs cap doesn't matter much in the Staal or proposed Gardiner trade“. Like I said, I’ve had this conversation with multiple users on the site but no one has been able to provide any support for this speculation while I can point to numerous instances and even quotes from GMs that go directly against this speculation. Your speculation comes down to Detroit would’ve taken on Staal for the same compensation if his salary was his full AAV (5.7M vs 3.2M) which is a 78% increase in cash. My comment is saying both AAV & cash need to be accounted for in a formula to determine how much something should cost to offload but with an asterisk on both of them. If it’s a one year deal and you know you’re not going to be even remotely close to the cap ceiling then AAV holds less weight and at the same time if you’re extremely close to the ceiling then more weight.
