This Jones Trade makes sense

Created by: Tmclean64
Team: 2020-21 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: May 31, 2021
Published: May 31, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Fairly even value IMO and checks boxes for both teams. Columbus gets a top 6 center which Jarmo wants, and a solid RHD back to replace Jones, plus a Pick for the rebuild. Caps upgrade their Blue line, add needed winger depth and free up some cap space.

The only debatable part of this to me is how high is the pick. What are your thoughts?

It makes sense for Washington, but not CBJ.

Yeah I don’t think it does. Not for a rebuilding team like the jackets. We needed the center but not a center who is late 20s trending down and locked up to early- mid 30s at 8 million. We should trade him for futures and players who are younger and have room to grow.

If CBJ is rebuilding they’ll be rebuilding for a very long time. Most of their players are 26 and younger. Just means your trading young players for younger players to start a new cycle.

Or keep your players under 22. And move the older guys like Jones and werenski but keep guys who add to a positive environment like bjorkstrand and Atkinson. Add to your younger core. Just because your trading a 26 year old doesn’t mean your gonna be in a long rebuild. I’m missing the logic here. You don’t have to pull a sabers and literally trade everything not strapped down. Look at how that does. No leadership established and young guys flounder in the wind.

If you’re rebuilding Atkinson (31) and Bjorkstrand (26) are the first to go.

CBJ was bad this year but they’re very young still. They’re committed to Laine so they need to find him a C. Jones wanting out is a blessing. He’s bad but his reputation around the league should get you that center. That’ll be a massive offensive boost. The back end will need some work but Werenski is very good so there’s a building block. A quality D addition to replace Jones and they’re well on their way to getting back to the postseason.

I dont get the sense ownership or Jarmo want to go full rebuild at all. They need to keep their team relevant and interesting for the fans. Not to mention how much more money being in the playoffs brings into the organization. Kuz and Laine together has the potential to be a great Line, Jensen is also a nice piece that could do more with more opportunity.
