Kinda sounds like something unforgivable happened in New York. My guess is he’ll get an offer in Russia for a few million and we’ll never hear from him again.

Danault will not sign for that, 0 chance. he will sign for over 4.5M with MTL or someone else easily.
Kotkaniemi will cost more on his bridge deal.
Merrill was horrendous for them 0 need to resign him.
Lekhonen won't take less than he makes now.
Gustafsson is horrendous on D, wouldn't waste 1M on him.

Is that really ALL you think Phil will get? Also Lehkonen can't sign for less than 2.2 i believe, so I'd prob just not sign him and give KK more term for slightly more $

The decision would pretty much 100% rest with Weber. Maybe the Rangers locker room had a void of alphas at the time strong enough to set him straight? That problem clearly does not exist in Montreal.

I don’t believe that people are beyond redemption until they prove otherwise.

Honestly, I have no idea what Danault’s plan is. He’s a UFA, so ultimately it’s his decision. I think the best comp of post-Covid contracts to Phil is Adam Lowry. That’s the contract I posted here. 5x$3.25mm.

Re: Lehkonen, I believe the rule for team elected arbitration (I don’t think it would ever go there), the cba parameters are set at 85% of previous year’s salary for the floor. Given Lehky’s stats these past two seasons, he doesn’t have much leverage. I still like the player a lot though and want to keep him.

His salary this year is actually $2.2mm.

Fair enough, but Lowry is a 3rd liner who cld move up to play 2nd line sometimes. Danault is our #1 C, who can move down to play 2nd or even a shutdown 3rd line C if need be. I think his value is closer to double that on the open market pre-covid. BUT like you said, who knows now with the cap not moving and league revenue in the red...

No interest in DeAngelo, doubt he plays again in the NHL.

We get to see both head to head in a battle for the Canadian championship, so to speak. Lowry got the big goal game 1. I agree that Danault outperformed in the previous 3 years, but both, especially post-Covid, ultimately are going to be paid based on what role they project to have going forwards.

If Columbus wanted and paid Max Domi $5.3mm, I could see them also having interest in Phil, especially having lost Dubois this year. But then again, maybe they prefer to go after someone like RNH instead? So many variables...

as someone who follows the rangers, tony is a great offensive dman. his problem is he has the maturity of an 11 year old and he has aggression problems. rangers had many players try to set him straight like trouba kreider and smith however he is very stubborn and likely wont play again even with all his ability.

This post is largely to in response to someone who posted that we’ll trade for him, give up Ylonen and picks, and pay his full salary (maybe it’s his crazy uncle or something).

My point is more that IF (and it’s a huge IF), DeAngelo were to become a Hab....then this is the only way it would happen. Bergevin set the model with the Kovalchuk signing post buyout. These would be the same terms.

It’s a good assessment, except I’d argue that Trouba, Kreider, and Smith is not the same calibre of leadership as Weber, Perry and Price. If there’s any place that I’d argue he’d do well to choose a last chance type of situation, I’d suggest that the wise choice would be this one. Apparently, it almost happened around the trade deadline.

kreider is def a leader. hes been since around 2015 or so. trouba is a guy people turn to in the locker room like most of the rookies and smith is the team man. weber>kreider>price>trouba>smith=perry imo. also the rumor was for mtl to buy out deangelo

Put it differently then, sometimes certain personalities fit better together than others. Weber is an alpha’s alpha. He’s a Mark Messier type, to talk in Rangers speak.

I’m not saying this happens. What I’m saying is IF he ends up a Hab, then this is the only way it happens.

thats a fair point. deangelo has had aggresion problems since juniors when he would get suspended and benched for his behavior. it has to do with his ego.

Guys like Deangelo don't change. He's essentially been raised on a basis of entitlement and I doubt his season in New York this year did anything to humble him. Yeah, maybe Weber could set him straight but he'll still have the chip on his shoulder for being "wronged" in New York.

Best to just stay away from him.

Your points speaks exactly to my thought process. Weber would either quickly convince him that everything that happened to him was no one else’s fault but his own, or he will no longer be playing in the NHL. And as far as “humbling” himself goes, a 2 way contract at $750k should go a long way from what he was used to seeing next to his name on capfriendly before. Zero financial risk for Bergevin. If his ego won’t let him sign that? Then we don’t want him.
