Trading up at draft

Created by: MGabes19

Initial Creation Date: Jun. 4, 2021

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Not necessarily what I think will happen, but I do think Chuck will struggle to find a trade partner due to flat cap. He can't overpay since we don't have a ton of space, and no team will be willing to take big contracts.

If the above is truly the case, Flyers HAVE to go after Clarke. I still think Phil could recover and possibly fill that spot, but we still need depth at that position. He played with grown men (granted in a not-so-great league) so there is the possibility that he's NHL ready. If he slips to 5, Flyers need to trade up.

I feel that CBJ needs center depth, so let me know if this package would be enough to entice them:

Like there's no possible way to entice them? Or my package wasn't enough to entice them?

#14OA pick+Morgan Frost+Vegas's 2021 5th round pick, Comes nowhere near getting you the 5th overall pick. I wouldn't even give up the 6th pick for that.

Is there anyone drafting in the top-6 that you think the Flyers could entice?

Columbus needs that pick! If they can get their hands on one of Kent Johnson, or Matthew Beniers, they have to keep it. They don’t have a good prospect pool.

13th overall pick, a top-9 center (Frost) is a steep price to pay to move up 8 spots. Maybe change the 5th to a third. But I still feel that's an overpayment

From what I've read, Beniers is going @ #2. So I don't think they have a shot at him.

You do make a good point, they don't have a great prospect pool, so maybe it'll cost Flyers another prospect.

I think it depends on who Seattle gets in the expansion draft, and who they want to start their team around. If they suck next year and get another top 5 pick, I see them picking a defence man this year then, because they are a few center man next year, but not the best defence men for top 5. With Matthew Savoie, Brad Lambert, and Shane Wright etc. People should let Savoie slip to the oilers though haha, because we have his brother.

The highest you might be able to get is #7 from the Sharks if they make the wrong decision regarding their future and decide they’re still competitive. That would cost you a guy like Konecny though, maybe even more. Top 10 picks are weighted extremely heavily, once the pick is locked in at a certain spot it has more value than “a 1st.” Looking at #7 you can see guys like Clarke, Wallstedt, Johnson, Eklund maybe being available (top pair D, elite starter, first line forwards) and guys like that generally bust less often. A good prospect and a mid-1st isn’t gonna jump you close to the top 5.

I think that your premise is faulty. Columbus doesn't need center depth; they need a top- center.

The only way we trade that pick to CBJ is if it involves Jones. How would the 5th OA pick help us right now?

After a little bit of quick research the only time in the salary cap era where the 5th OA pick was traded at the draft was in 2008. The Trade was 5th OA for 7th OA, 68th OA and a 2nd in 2009. That’s 2 spots for a 2nd and a 3rd. You’ll need to come to the table with more for Columbus to move back 8 spots.

Damn this is a good point. That much for two spots. So maybe Flyers need to trade two firsts and an A prospect to get anywhere close?

Like I said in description, this is only the scenario if Chuck can't find help on trade market. This would help if Clarke is NHL ready now. Which I doubt he is.

I def don't anticipate this happening, I was just curious what the fellow capfriendly'ers thought the price of moving up would be.

This is a good point. Sounds like they would hang up unless Coot's name was thrown out. Which would cause Philly fans to burn the city down

If I remember correctly, there is a significant drop off after 7-8. So I see your point in that 13 is worth a lot less than 5-7.

Yeah I personally think the first identifiable tier ends at pick 8 (in no particular order Power, Beniers, Hughes, Clarke, Eklund, Guenther, Johnson, Edvinsson would be my top 8), maybe 9 if you include Wallstedt. Then you get into the guys like McTavish/Lysell/Lucius who should all be gone by 12, and 13 is kinda the start of where it opens up more, you could go with guys like Raty, Sillinger, Lambos, Chibrikov, Cossa, there’s really no consensus and it wouldn’t be surprising to see any of those guys fall 5-10 picks further back either. That’ll hurt if you’re trying to trade up into the really good top 8 tier.
