Purely hypothetical offersheet - read description

Description
First note,
1. Offersheets are not likely
2. I am only picking Vegas here since CF has them as last pick
3. And I am only picking Reinhart since he fits as an example here.

(if someone has better team/player example...let me know)

------

Most offersheets are built to pick off players from cap-crunched teams.
But they could be used as an out to get a player to UFA more easily.

The scenario here is that competitive team offers 1-year, lower dollar contract to player with 1-year until his UFA season. Buffalo surely wants him to sign a multi-year deal, but if he wants to move on sooner, signing a deal may be in his interest.

Reinhart is coming off of a good season, so he may want arbitration. If he goes that route, he will not be eligible for an offer-sheet.

------

Does Reinhart sign if he wants out of Buffalo? A 1-year deal gets him out of Buffalo earlier and gets him to UFA next season. It would be less than his qualifying offer though.

He’s been screwed around too much. He deserves to have a long term contract on a playoff team.

Sure - Buffalo would have to (and then deal him)
But I was more curious about whether or not Reinhart signs if offered a lower-than-QO type offersheet

Reinhart could simply file for arbitration and make twice that and still get to UFA

But, he would have to stay on rebuilding team another year.
Would he rather have 1-year $6.5m in Buffalo...or 1-year at half that on contender?

I don't know the answer...just thought it was another way we should be looking at offersheets in general.

Buffalo would match almost any realistic offer sheet

Buffalo matches the 3 mil offer sheet, he's on the Sabres for another season and makes 1/2 the money.

Signing an offer sheet doesn't mean you are going to be with another team...

    No I know. Sabres match.
But it does rule out any possibility of long-term deal.
I’m probably getting too cute by half in this example.

But I think there are other ways an offer sheet could be used, other than hitting over-the-cap teams with contracts they can’t match. That was what I was going after.

That’s the easiest contract in nhl history to match

Yeah, agree. Not the best example probably.
Was trying to think of where a 1-year OS may work that gets a player straight to UFA. And my question was really whether or not the player signs, if the OS was below his QO.

Just a different way to use offer-sheets.
