My offseason

Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 21, 2021
Published: Jun. 21, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The goal of this team is to win now, or in the next couple years. A lot of sideways moves to try and fix some holes while maybe sacrificing a strength. More skill, but also adding some grit and physicality.
TO CLEAR UP CONFUSION:
The 3.5 million in cap hit Toronto sends to Detroit is 2 million/year for the rest of Nylander's contract and 1.5 million/year for the rest of Marners.
I retained on Tom Wilson because Cap Friendly doesn't allow you to trade a player then trade back for them with salary retained. If you think that is cap circumvention the Leafs can add a 3rd team and the trade can go: Leafs (Marner, Nylander, FRP)-->Detroit (keeps the FRP, retains on Marner and Nylander)-->3rd team-->Leafs (get Marner and Nylander back at lower cap hits)
Leafs will have an extra 1 million in cap space (I can't retain all 3.5 million in the Wilson trade).

Leafs add in robertson, amirov, sandin, and then wings will retain contracts for the next 45 years like suggested

I don't see WSH doing that trade and especially retaining WIlson

The wings might actually need it to get to the cap floor. They currently need like 30 more million in cap hits to get there and their only big FAs are Bertuzzi (likely around 4.5-5 mill), Vrana (around 5.5 mill), and Bernier (3-4 mill). The rest of their roster will be filled out with low AAV players.

Its not retained salary its part of the salary the leafs traded away because you can't trade straight salary so I had to be creative to get the salary the leafs save. Read the description and the trade description

Caps pass. Wilson is more valuable to them than a year of Reilly and they wouldn’t extend

I am so confused? Are the wings taking salary from marner and nylander somehow? Or taking on half of Wilson's contract? Because taking on half of Wilson's contract makes sense but I don't see how they would take salary from nylander and marner? What's that about? I don't think you can trade part of a cap hit unless the player moves and you can't trade a player somewhere and then trade back for him

The wings are taking on 3.5 million dollars of cap hit from marner and nylanders contracts. For some reason, I can't trade the players to detroit then trade back for them with retained salary. I had to improvise so that I could actually have the saved salary in effect. In the NHL you can trade someone and then trade back for them but not on cap friendly.

There is absolutely ZERO chance the NHL would let that happen. No way, no how, not ever. They really investigated the Brooks Orpik buyout situation with Washington and Colorado and this is way worse. It is 100% salary cap manipulation and they would nullify this transaction in a second. Neither GM is dumb enough to even try it.

    Unless Tampa Bay did it.

No, trades like that happen. Maybe the Leafs would have to get a 3rd party involved so it goes toronto, detroit (retention), 3rd team, toronto but salary trades are legal. It's literally salary retention

Name the last time an NHL team traded two players to another team, had that team retain salary on those players and then trade those two players right back.

It's salary cap circumvention. Guaranteed that trade gets nullified.

Maybe it does, hopefully it doesn't.

Detroit doesn't need help getting to the salary floor. You're asking us to take 3.5 for three years and 1.5 for an additional year...and you want to give us a whole 1st round pick? That's 12 million! The team that gave up a 1st to get 6 will give us 2 1sts to get 12. Simple math. Otherwise no.

Detroit is 12 million from the cap floor and Vrána, Hronek, and Bertuzzi alone will make them reach it.

Besides what you're proposing is cap circumvention and any team involved will forfeit a whole bunch of picks.
