Cap situation after next year

Created by: Suzuki_Cup
Team: 2022-23 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 25, 2021
Published: Jun. 25, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This team is actually pretty solid. We really need a LW though.
Best case scenario is that Weber retires and gives us 8mil to work with.
Maybe we could bridge Zuke and wait for the cap to start increasing again, but I would rather secure him long term.

Resigning Caufield will be hard if Weber stays. We will have to trade one of Armia/Lehkonen, plus using Primeau as backup. Even then, keeping Caufield will require creativity. With this team, we have around 5mil to resign Caufield, which is enough if we add Armia/Lehkonen's cap hit.

MTL can't afford to loose Danault. We have no one to replace him (Evans and Poehling still need to improve).

That would solve the Caufield issue. We just have to hope the cap goes up before Suzuki wants real money.

I would be more than happy to see Danault sign a 5*5 deal. Though, I do not think it is realistic, unless he agrees to take less to help the team become more competitive.

I think that's realistically what Danault would probably get from someone on the open market. I would assume that GMMB would try to keep him for around $5.5-6 million per for 4-6 years.

I also agree that the Canadiens really do not have anyone to replace him with. He is really proving invaluable during this postseason Everyone is correct: he does not score a lot. But he also completely shut down all of the opposition's best scorers. Basically, he cancels out goals. I personally would sign him.

so if he does go who you think replaces him or is brought in to do so?

for now gotta say Evans

cause yeah 5mill for a 3c is a bit much even though in his case despite the production hes earned it through other means

100% Evans and Poehling might surprise, he was real good in Laval. Watching Laval games regularly, Poehling at 21-22 yo was better than Evans at 23 yo in the AHL, so he might win that 3C and Evans stays 4C
Poehling is better offensively and bigger than Evans
We’ll see next year but yeah Evans proved he is really good defensively and a good forechecker. For the offensive, I don’t know if he has it in him, but at least he has a better shot than Danault

Danault is awfull offensively and a king defensively. In my opinion JG Pageau and Yanni Gourde are worth much more than Danault and the Habs can't afford him for more than 4M for 4 to 5 years. It would be a very bad idea to sign Suzuki for 2 or 3 years. Don't forget that Cole Caufield will be signed in 2023-24 and Romanov too. Marc Bergevin has to be very careful with the cap that should not increase !
