Ideal Islanders Offseason

Created by: AndrewGoalie33
Team: 2021-22 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 13, 2021
Published: Jul. 13, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Trade Explanations:

Andrew Ladd + 2022 NYI 1st for DET 2022 5th:
Detroit is still rebuilding, so acquiring a 1st at the small price of taking on a bad contract for a few years and losing a 5th makes sense. Feels like a very Steve Yzerman-esque move, however I wouldn’t be surprised if the Islanders gave up more to get the Ladd contract off the books.

Ross Johnston for OTT 2022 6th:
Ross Johnston has not developed as the replacement for Matt Martin that they hoped he would become when Martin left for Toronto. Now that, Martin has been back, Johnston has been made redundant. Johnston could use a fresh start, and Ottawa takes a chance to try and develop him into a better player at the cost of a 6th.

Leo Komarov + COL 2022 2nd + NYI 2023 3rd for ARI Future Considerations:
Islanders make this move during to get the Komarov contract off their books. Although Uncle Leo has been a good player in his role for the Islanders, it is evident that they need more offense on the team Leo Komarov is made redundant by the three players on the Identity Line: Matt Martin, Casey Cizikas, and Cal Clutterbuck. Arizona has to give up basically nothing, and they need all of the draft picks they can get. Taking on a small cap hit for future assets is what the Coyotes need to do.

Nick Leddy to Seattle:
Although there are rumors of the Islanders shopping Nick Leddy, I find it unlikely that anyone takes on his contract and the Islanders lose him to Seattle in the expansion draft.

Jordan Eberle + Kieffer Bellows + Thomas Hickey + Bode Wilde + COL 2021 2nd + NYI 2022 3rd for Vladimir Tarasenko (50% retained) + Vince Dunn
This is a blockbuster type trade. Islanders give up a current top-line winger in Eberle to roll the dice with a high-risk high-reward player in Vladimir Tarasenko. Tarasenko has requested a trade, has a no-movement clause, and has stated the Islanders as a team he would like to be traded to. St. Louis has little leverage, but still get a prospect in Vance Sompel and a potential Middle-6 forward in Kieffer Bellows, along with some solid draft picks. Although losing Vince Dunn hurts, his name has been in trade talks for a while so it would make sense if he was also apart of the deal between the Islanders and the Blues.

Aside from one insane outlier, this is easily the worst STL-NYI trade offer I’ve seen yet.

The athletic commment section and Twitter is full of STL fans thinking that the isles would give up Beauvillier or Dobson for Tarasenko.

I don't doubt it, but those are casual, clueless fans. I kinda expect people on this board to know better, but maybe not.

Absolutely, but speaking on just the scope of this board, there are some fanbases that stick out, and not in a good way. Isles fans are starting to fall into that area.

    1. You're sending the Blues $11M in cap, not including Bellows and MDC rights
    2. You want Tarasenko 50% retained, totaling $7.5M over the next two years
    3. Eberle and Leddy aren't even high impact players, only reason I'm even fine with taking Eberle back is to make the cap work for you guys
    4. MDC is a legitimate bust, and Bellows isn't really trending in a positive direction either
    5. Assuming Dunn takes like a $3M bridge deal, and Bellows/MDC take like $1M each, Blues gain over $6M in cap including Tarasenko's retention, really quality stuff

All together, you're essentially using STL as your cap trash dumpster, and not even sending any actual decent value to them.

To be fair, that's literally in an article by hockey journos suggesting they could get Dobson or Beau for Tarasenko.

That’s true, but if they suggested that the isles could get kyrou and peronuvich for Eberle, clearly that’s unrealistic . It was clearly a bunch out of touch trade proposals.

What do you propose is a better deal, since you’re clearly the expert here.
