I agree. Not sure what Dubas was thinking. But he likes to do weird things. In the next 2 drafts out of 14 possible picks, Leafs only have 6 picks. I am not sure what the Leaf brass see in him.

Holl is so much better than Bortuzzo. This makes TO so much worse.

It made 0 sense to me. A lot of what dubas does makes no sense to me. Like why trade for McCann and leave him exposed, after he just had a great year, and would probably be a 60-70 pt guy with matthews lol. It makes 0 sense.

That 60-70 point guy is a bit of a stretch. Nylander was barely that with Matthews.

Listen I like mccaan but he is no superstar. He was traded by a team that wasn’t protecting him to a team that isn’t protecting him. This is your first clue.

Would I like to keep him fit the middle 6? Sure, but not at the cost of our top 4.

I would have really liked to see:
McCann Matthews Marner
Kerfoot Tavares Nylander
Robertson Player X Simmonds
Engvall Brooks Spezza

Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Sandin
Player X Liljegren

Campbell
Player X

For a team in desperate need of secondary scoring, protecting Holl over Kerfoot and McCann was a mistake

McCann was on pace for 61 pts this year, on pace for 26 goals. I’m sure his production may have slowed in a full 82. But he wasn’t playing with someone like matthews or marner. He could definitely be a 60+ pt guy. If you go 7-3-1, you lose one of Holl/Kerfoot/Dermott. Two of the 3 are already exposed. I’m valuing McCann over holl all day long. Just because Pittsburgh didn’t want to protect McCann, doesn’t mean Toronto has to do the same lol.

Bortuzzo is a #6 defenceman. Holl has been fine in the top 4 and makes 2 million. He is not remotely a problem for TO. Bortuzzo could not play the minutes Holl does.

Holl played 20 plus minutes a night and never cost the team anything and often was a big contributor to wins. Bortuzzo is a bottom pair defender and has never been more than that. This is easily proven.

than try Liljegren in top 4. you can see if it works out and if hes ready which I think he is, especially paired with Muz

Its pretty easy to understand. Seattle has 3 good options to choose from. Kerfoot, McCann and Dermott. Whoever they take doesn't matter, they are covered. Take McCann we keep Kerfoot who showed his value in the playoffs. Take Kerfoot we have McCann who is cheaper. Take Dermott and we have both and better depth than last year. This isn't complicated.

Just throw a rookie into the shutdown pair. Or they give him 3rd pair minutes and let him get comfortable and eventually push Holl down. At which point they have a really good 3rd pair defender in Holl at 2 million. Again, this is all really easy to understand.

Or we could leave Matthews unprotected and see if SDA is ready. Frees up 12m in cap and we get to keep mccaan. Dubas is so stupid.

How are the Leafs desperate for secondary scoring? That isn't and hasn't been the issue apart from a 5 game series vs Columbus. Zero issue with secondary scoring last season and in the playoffs it was Marner blowing it all that cost them.

😂 isn’t that the definition of secondary scoring? If your stars need help and your relying on Mikheyev, Engvall, Simmonds, Brooks, Thornton, Foligno, Nash, Galchenyuk, Spezza, this team needs a better bottom 6.

But no argument from me. This team needs to have a better performance from Matthews and Marner to go anywhere in the playoffs.

Keeping Holl over Kerfoot or McCann is a mistake. There is no debate for me.
