Description
Per Andy Strickland: Can confirm #Oilers have both 7 and 8 year contracts agree to with Zach Hyman. EDM and TOR are working to execute a sign and trade which will pay Hyman 8 yrs @ around $5 mil. Salary comes in higher in middle of contract, and includes some no move protection.

people are gonna start underrating hyman right about now, which is a shame, because he is an extremely valuable glue guy and will be missed

however, at 29, he keeps missing more and more of each season (sample size and point projections vastly overrate his offense imo), prob hasn't been healthy in the playoffs since boston 2018. Hurt his ankle in 2018, then played on a torn ACL in 2019 playoffs, surgery, sprained it again this season etc. etc.

sad to see him go but it's for the best

The funniest part isn't even the contract, it's the fact that they'll pay Toronto to get that 8th year. Are owners blind or something?

As a Wings fan, I genuinely feel for you Edmonton fans. Holland should have hung it up years ago and I am so insanely grateful we have Yzerman steering the ship now.

Oilers fans: we wanna win now! Stop wasting mcdavid and draisaitl prime years.
Also oilers fans: fire Holland for these bad contracts!

Can't have it both ways.
Reality is, the depth the oilers need is: Yamamoto, Puljujarvi and Bear taking another step in development.
Bouchard, McLeod and Holloway establishing themselves as NHL regulars.

I think the oilers should've waited this one last season out to get closer to that point. Then they could've brought in temporary guys around that core to go for it. I think they win a round in the playoffs this season regardless of the moves they make.
Hyman should be good for the first 2-3 years of that deal but it'll be tough after that.
Still need to address the goaltending and defense to be a contender.
