Gardiner is also undergoing back surgery and is likely to be out the year... why would Carolina retain on him when they can throw him on LTIR and make it disappear?

It's because one is a one-year deal and the other is two years. Carolina is taking the bigger contract for this year but Seattle is taking on an extra year with Gardiner. So it makes total sense
