Potential Hughes Pettersson Matching Contracts

Created by: TheseDogMotifs
Team: 2021-22 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 9, 2021
Published: Aug. 9, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Drancer was speculating on the Vancast mailbag that Hughes could be signed to a 6 year contract at a 7.5M AAV due to his 10.2c status if Petey was signed to a bridge at the same AAV. I think that it is a bit of wishful thinking (especially after all the signings this offseason) but it's an interesting idea to consider.

I personally think Quinn is gonna do whatever gets him to ufa quickest to go to the devils to play with his brothers. If 6 years is the soonest he’s eligible to leave as a ufa it might be that then.

For reference, a 5 year contract would carry him to UFA.

If I’m him I’d push 3 year bridge then. Then accept the qualifying offer at like a 5% raise each year or whatever it is and leave in 5 years. Nothing personal with Vancouver, just be really cool to play with my brothers on the same team.

The Devils would sell so many jerseys if they had all three Hugheses.

Doesn't sound like he cares about that right now. The holding point seems to be that he wants a 7 or 8 year deal and the Canucks can't afford to give him that

Well guess he’ll be playing with Jack and Luke sooner. Honestly it’s too bad they can’t lock him up between Heiskanen and Makar’s deals. That’d be literally perfect. Although it’s got me thinking next year if Fox wants, he could easily ask for $10 mil and it wouldn’t even be ridiculous.

Usually 4 years. Why is it a year longer?

The marketing would be insane. Pretty much the Hanson brothers, except skilled not fighters.

No 5% for contracts over a few mil.

Who knows what their relationship will be like then. Maybe one or both leaves jersey by then. 4-5 years is a long time...

I don’t think he played enough to burn a year sooner on his entry contract like Makar did.

This is what I've been hearing too, the recent RFA Dmen signings makes an 8 year extension for Quinn really expensive at the moment. Hughes may have a 10.2c clause which reduces his leverage but still, I don't think a 8 year extension is feasible for Hughes given the canucks' current cap situation.

I’m not a betting man, but I’d be shocked. Jack is poised to be their number center for the next decade. Luke and Ty Smith will battle for top defenseman imo.

I think that proposed deal makes a lot of sense for Hughes. He doesn't have the defensive side of his game down yet, so I wouldn't want to go over $7.5m, and 6 years is a good compromise for both sides -- really, the Ekblad contract is about as high as I would go.

For Pettersson, I think he could be signed for 7/8 years at around $9m long-term. I mean, should he really make more than that? Maybe $9.5, but that's it. If VAN can spend slightly less on Dickinson, they can reach that $9m number for Pettersson and then not have to worry about this anymore.

I may be mistaken but I think standard is 7 years.

I checked cap Friendly's FAQ

Quoting: FAQ
What is an unrestricted free agent (UFA)?
A player becomes a free agent when their contract expires on July 1 after the last League Year of their contract. Any player who meets the following requirements becomes an unrestricted free agent (UFA):
Is 27 years of age on June 30 of the contract expiry year
Has seven (7) Accrued Seasons where an Accrued Season is earned when the player was on the clubs active roster for 40 Regular Season games (30 if the player is a goaltender). Games missed due to a hockey related injury will count towards an accrued season in the season of the injury, plus one additional season after the injury.
Meets the requirements for Group 6 UFA Status (See below)
An unrestricted free agent is eligible to sign a contract with any club as of noon ET on July 1 after the last League Year of their contract

Only had three of the four and Jarred was a non factor. Never had Marc. Plus I’d say the Hughes brothers have more potential in terms of being dynamic and elite. Cause Marc was a solid defense man, Jordan was never a superstar imo and Eric was very good but not elite superstar level.

If a college kid comes out and joins the team after the College season it always burns a year.

Don't forget that to qualify for UFA status, one has to be at least 27 years old too, while Quinn is 21 at the moment.

They could give him a deal similar to Heiskanen they would just have to give Petey a bridge deal

I follow that but it’s not gonna count as a season towards ufa if it’s under 7 games I believe. Not 100% sure. I just checked and Hughes only play 5 games so not sure if that gave him a season towards ufa eligibility,

Him being a 10.2 might hurt his leverage somewhat, but lower leverage doesn't mean he will sign long term at a lowered rate. It will mostly effect what he gets on a bridge deal. If he takes a two year deal, he's getting north of 9mil on his next contract, so why would he sign long term for less?

Boy the cap makes things tough cause if he lights it up you’re talking $10-11 mil plus easy on his next deal.
