You said it's been 4 years. He's only played 2 professional seasons. You can't count years before he even signed a contract, and those aren't professional seasons anyway.
Many players dip their toes in the NHL to see what they need to work on, then go back to the AHL where they can get more ice time and improve their game. It doesn't mean they "suck".
Dumba was returned to the WHL after his first 13 NHL games. Rantanen had 0 points in his first 9 game season before being sent down, and only 1 goal and 2 assists in his first 20 NHL games, and he was a 10th overall pick.
Point is, it takes more time to evaluate and develop most players. Even highly drafted players can benefit from extra time in the AHL following an NHL evaluation period.
Plus Poehling was a NCAA middle 6 Center
Shorter Seasons , Shorter playoffs, all road trips are planned around school so its mostly games crammed into weekends and tournaments.
Stamina training just wasnt there and neither was his defensive ability
Like Evans we knew it was going to take a couple seasons to get him conditioned for the NHL
Thats really his biggest down fall as his hockey IQ is solid
He's just such a big guy that he gets gassed so easy even in the AHL , or he did.
He earned his way to top guy in the AHL largely due to improved conditioning
He's no top 6 guy but he could be a serious Lars Eller option at best and a Colton Sissons option at worst
Especially now that he's not Rebelling against Claude Julien out of spite like all the young Centers did.
Burrows really helped turn things around for Poehling and speaks very highly of him
