I'm honestly surprised. They get their left side set for the next decade and a 1C plus they get rid of the 9.25Mx8 albatross Nurse contract. It is McDavid we're talking about though...

If Eichel didn't have a neck issue I would say this heavily favors Edmonton but the downgrade in Eichel vs McDavid is major especially considering Eichel's health. You are right though, that Nurse contract is absolutely horrendous. Edmonton is never going to go anywhere.

I'm surprised to see McDavid doesn't have a NMC (yet).

The problem with the value is that Holland obviously doesn't view Nurse's contract the same way the rest of the league does. I mean, he JUST signed it. I can't imagine he's already regretting it.

Like Nurse's contract or not, they had to give it to him. When you bridge someone and they keep getting better and better every year, your not left with much of a choice.

Most Oilers fans were thinking around 8 × 8. The extra is the cost of having to live in Edmonton. Lol.

I don't think he's going to put up huge offensive numbers going forward so people will be quick to say he's overpaid. He definitely needs to take another step defensively and be more consistent at that end of the ice.

I would have waited a season... his current contract isn't even over yet. I don't think anyone gives him more than 9.25Mx8 as a UFA anyways (probably why Nurse signed early). For anything over 8M you'd expect the guy to be elite at both ends of the ice... unfortunately I think Nurse is below average defensively.

The 8 year contract will sign him for ages 27-35 so he will likely be on the decline for part of the contract. If it was a 4 year deal it would be an overpay but at least you're only paying for prime years. With this much term even 7M AAV would be risky.

Putting it more simply. Is Nurse worth twice as much as RNH?

I kinda agree with most of your points. The flip side of the argument though becomes, what if Nurse has another great year and then wants 10 next year? No matter his asking price, the Oilers are not in a position to let him walk. They are all in for these next 4-5 years. That quest for the cup can't even begin if they lose Nurse and good luck getting a top pairing dman to sign in Edmonton.

I'm critical of Nurse's game as well but there isn't really a choice. Beggars can't be choosers.

The core of this team is set. Their success now lies heavily on the youth. The progression of Bouchard, Puljujarvi, Yamamoto, Holloway, McLeod & Broberg will determine if they are true cup contenders or not.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. There is NO trade that involves McDavid that is a win-win. It's just not possible. He is the single best player in the universe and will be easily one of the 3 best of all time when all is said and done. To give the amount of assets it would take for ANY team to get him, would not be worth it, because they would be left with nothing around him and an empty cupboard, while conversely, the Oilers would have just, well... TRADED THE BEST PLAYER IN THE FREAKING UNIVERSE.

It just doesn't make sense, for anyone, anywhere. Funny enough, the only team that even has the assets to do it, is the LA Kings and I think Edmonton remembers all too well how that ended for them the last time they traded the best player in the universe to LA.

The difference is the Oilers had 5 cups with Gretzky. The furthest they've gone with McDavid is the second round.

Even if Nurse had another "great" year he wouldn't be worth 10M. He would need to become strong defensively to be worth that. On the flip side what if he plays worse next season when he's no longer in the Canadian division? Then you're stuck with him at 9.25M for 8 years when you could have potentially gotten him for 6M.
