Especially if true, if the Canes don't want qualify him next summer at 6.1m. So in effect the Canes paid a first and third for one year of KK.

Yeah hes not worth his contract now but thats pretty clearly not what the canes are valuing here, they saw a long term value and the habs put themselves in a poorish position to lose him, pretty much the only way in which you'll ever see an offer sheet not get matched imo. I doubt the habs would've traded him for a 1st and 3rd 2 weeks ago and if carolina offers him 2x2 (probably his actual current valueish) it just gets easily matched. If KK doesnt develop and just stays overpaid then yeah its dumb but hes got time to prove it. Trochek dips next year then youve already got a potential 2c to just slide in aswell
