After the palmieri disaster

Created by: UBS_ARENA
Team: 2021-22 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 1, 2021

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Its a terrible contract. We gave a declining 30+ player a 4 year deal worth more aav than he ever shouldve gotten.
The 1 saving grace was his disaster shot% last year which usually indicates a regression to the mean. Hopefully he still is the palmieri we knew in NJD, but either way considering the concerns its an overpay.

There are 2 possible options here.
1. What i did in my acgm.
2. Delete the ARI and TOR trades and the donato signing. Play aho at LD3 and send hickey down.
Both options are ok imo, tho id rather the one i did.

I posted in the other thread but I'll just repeat myself and say that I don't think it's that bad at all. It's not a steal like Pelech or Beau but it's reasonable IMO.

Also - Palms will be playing with Lee and Barzal. Will bounce back. 25-30 goals inbound.

Palmieri is a better finisher , which is what the isles need. Saad got more term and only 500 k less

Saad’s game is based on speed. When he slows down, he won’t be as effective. Palmieri’s game doesn’t predicate his game in strengths that will regress quickly.

Younger than Eberle and costs 500k less. I swear no one is happy unless everyone takes a cizikas-esque discount. What would you have preferred happen that is actually reasonable?

Palmieri is still good for 20-25 goals a year. $5 million is a reasonable rate.

No. If i can id like to keep leo. No one will take him if we send him down but hes still a decent player and is a perfect sub for the 4th line.

then youre the only one i guess. Others want to keep him dumped or trade him away so you have more cap space for guys like Parise and Zajac

I was hoping that would be wallys spot. But even if not it will be next year. So 3 years playing 3rd line shutdown minutes isnt ideal at 5 million for a declining forward whose calling card was his shot.

No i agree thats why i said if possible. But rn theres no need to move him so why would i pay for that? And hes also a decent player. If we needed the cap that would be a different story.

Palmieri plays a heavy style of hockey. As he ages hes gonna start getting injured more and more. (Sounds kind of familiar, kind of like andrew ladd).

my bad. I think though that the pens wont trade Pettersson for picks. Hextall said he wantsd to do hockey trades, and when I saw this it made perfect sense.

If he gets injured then sure it will speed up his decline. There are plenty of players that play a heavy style that aren’t injury prone, so it’s just speculation at this point. Ladd fell off a cliff before he joined the isles and his style of play isn’t remotely close to Palmieri’s

Ive said the entire offseason i didnt want palmieri for more than 2 years. If we were giving him term then i wanted less aav. If he wanst willing then let him go. There was no need to sign him to this deal.

And by hockey trade i think he also meant not for older (24YO or higher) prospects that need there chance right now or they are busts.

Hes over 30 years old. Most players who play a very heavy style of hockey like palmieri does start to fall off at around 30-31yo. They start getting injured a lot bc their body cant hold up anymore as it ages. I mentioned ladd just bc of the injuries and what i think unfortunately palmieri will become.

Not every player 30+ who plays a heavy style becomes injury prone. Palmieri will 100% decline over the next 4 years, that’s a given. My point is Palmieri likely won’t fall off a cliff like you’re suggesting. Players with Palmieri’s skillset usually see a slow decline. Atkinson, Craig smith , hornqvist ,, Parise, TJ Oshie are all players who play a similar style to Palmieri and not one of them has fallen off a cliff.

Fair enough but how many of them started declining already like palmieri.
Like i said i hope im wrong and hes mike bossy 2.0 the next 4 seasons. I'd like nothing better than to be wrong about this one. Heres to hoping i am 🤞🤞
