A late first this year vs next year means 2yrs till you see drafted player in the NHL vs 3yrs at best. That’s a big difference. A first isn’t just a first. A first in the closest draft holds more value than future firsts.

You can have top ten in 2 years if not protected, see, and this is where the deal can pass, unprotected top 10 vs late first next year in a top4 team ... you need to value the team with who you trade. If they fall (and they are going to someday) it's going to be in future not this season that would bring a real late first (too late to be good and who could also take 4 yrs to develop instead of 3 ...) ! Gamble at best if not top 10!
