Mr Dermott goes to Washington

Created by: Eli
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 1, 2021
Published: Oct. 1, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Leafs fans keep dumping two or three depth players to WSH for picks.

WSH is up against the cap with just 21 players, when healthy. Here's how to dump those players and get those picks. Kempny is given no trade value here, because he's rusty after a year off, and with a year left on his deal, there is no guarantee he gets back to playing like he can. But at the top of his game, he can play top pair and win a Cup, so if he gets back this year, Toronto massively wins this trade.

And if not, they clear a little bit of cap space/roster space and get some late picks for guys they would end up waiving to bring up young guys, otherwise.

im confused as to why washington wants dermott/mikheyev though. Dermott i could see for age but he hasnt really proven hes worth trading for, all of washingtons wingers are equal to or better than mikheyev. i dont see washington as a trade partner where you get the potentially better player and late round draft capital. Just dont see that scenario playing out.

31-year-old is coming off several major injuries, including a torn Achilles’ tendon (2020) and a medial collateral ligament sprain (2021). Kempny has looked terrible, no thanks

Still an impractical 21 man roster. Trading two NHLers for an Kempy who is costs the Leafs 1.375 cap in the minors is like a big loss for the Leafs. Signing a e UFA RHD making 1m doesn't seem NHL good.
Leafs can keep Dermot and trade Mikheyev and be cap compliant.

Did you all enjoy not having to click "long-term outlook" to see their total cap hits? You're all very welcome. No need to bring it up.

Great question.

The Caps don't need to do this any more than Toronto does.

Mikheyev is about as good as Sheary, but plays a different style. More defense, but less offense. One of them sits, each night, if the team is healthy. But it's good to have depth.

Dermott is not half as good as a healthy, 100% on his game Michal Kempny. But I think the Caps should find someone to start the season at 4LD, whether that's through trade or UFA. Coburn doesn't even have a PTO yet, and would be fine. The guys that have PTOs would mostly be fine, too.

You ever think that about Spezza? Just wondering. Demers has 216 NHL points. Muzzin has 276. Each in 600 or so games played. Yes, I'm pencilling Demers in at $1M, but I wouldn't want to be the one on the phone, making the offer. smile

Yep. That's the risk. That's why I give him no trade value here. The reward is that if he gets back on his game he's a lot better than Sandin or Liljegren, still. Or has one of them finished top-30 among NHL defensemen in even strength points or plus/minus for a season, when I wasn't paying attention? With one year left on his contract and a good chance that the Olympics motivates him to do everything humanly possible to shake the rust off, Kempny could be quite valuable by this Spring, even if he keeps looking out of place through the preseason. I'm fine with WSH sending him to Hershey to get it together. Just also thought I'd suggest a way to make Dermott to WSH work, since it gets posted so often.

No they have not, but they are both not 31 and coming off major injuries. You are expecting the Leafs to give up on Dermott and Mikheyev (who have trade value) If they Leafs decide to part with either player the return will be better than Kempny. Keep the player

In the last week, on this board, five Tor fans are trying to trade one or two of those guys (and/or Engvall) to WSH for late picks. This is how that can happen, IMHO. So if you want to pass, the appropriate response is, "that's okay. We'll keep OUR players." No need to apologize. You just haven't been following the conversation.

Or Tor can add the picks instead and try to talk WSH into moving Hagelin or Jensen, but Hagelin and Jensen are their top penalty killers, and WSH ranked 8th in PK% last year, so it'd probably cost Tor (26th) a 2nd to get either.

Perfect, keep the player, TOR is better off with Dermott and Mikheyev. If the Leafs trade any players it will be for picks/prospects with no salary coming back. There is already enough depth on this roster. They do not need a player coming back.
