The OEL trade was more about getting rid of the three terrible contracts that went the other way. It was basically Garland for a 1st and OEL for Loui, Beagle and Roussel.

That aside, no way you can expect to get a 1st for 1 year of Rielly anyway at this point. Maybe if people are overpaying at the deadline like that silly team that paid a first for 7 games of Foligno

Lotta “what if’s” here. The whole offseason you propose falls apart when vancouver rejects that Rielly trade and Seattle rejects the Kerfoot trade

Why? Engvall is an AHL calibre player that can't be fully buried and Dermott is a run of the mil 3rd pairing D man. Cole at least smacks what moves, and he's only on a 1 year deal, as opposed to Dermotts 2. Cole is also a multiple-time cup champion, and the only member of the blueline to have accomplished that feat even once. He is also literally the Hurricanes personified. Like if the organization was a person, it would be Ian Cole.

    1. This is what Ian Cole's trade value is:

    https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/410224

    2. Ian Cole has a cap hit of 2.9 million while for Dermott/Engvall put together, it's 2.75 million.

    3. Dermott and Engvall are RFAs at the end of their contracts and will still be under team control.

Ian Cole has 1 year left and is a Pending UFA.

    4. You say Dermott is a run of the mil 3rd pairing D man.

    So is Cole.

    5. Sidney Crosby had more to do with those two cup wins.

Since 2017, Ian Cole has not won the Cup.

    6. If Ian Cole is in fact the Hurricanes personified, then you keep him.

If he's not, you make this trade.

    It's as simple as that.

However, I am a little skeptical that Ian Cole is the Hurricanes personified, considering he's never played for the Canes at any point in his career.

    1) That's a bad value trade

    2) Ian Cole is also an NHL caliber player. Engvall is not, and Dermott is an extra at best.

    3) Dermott and Engvall are RFA's sure, that Carolina do not have the contract spots for, or the projected cap space for

    4) Dermott is a 7th D, Cole can play top 4 in a pinch and on either side. Dermott has not played RD in the NHL.

    5) Cole has the only stanley cup winning experience anyone on the Carolina blueline has. He's going to be playing with a young partner, be it DeAngelo or Bear. You want them to learn from someone who's been there and done it

    6) What I mean by that is that his personality is literally everything Carolina have tried to be under Dundon.

    1. I agree.

It is what two other playoff contending teams believe to be his trade value however.

    2. If Travis Dermott is an extra at best, what does that make Greg Pateryn?

    3. After this trade, Carolina will have exactly 50 SPCs.

So, they do, in fact, have contract spots for Engvall and Dermott after this trade.

They have 24 million in projected cap space for the next offseason.

If either Niederreiter or Trocheck disappear as UFAs in the next offseason, a good chunk of that cap space will still be there.

    4. Capfriendly lists Travis Dermott as both a LD and a RD.

So, he has played RD in the NHL.

    5. Saying that DeAngelo wants to learn from someone like Ian Cole is a very interesting concept indeed wink

    6. If Ian Cole's personality is literally everything Carolina have tried to be under Dundon, then you keep him.

He owns the team and has invested millions upon millions in the Carolina Hurricanes.

That means he needs to be their biggest fan and their biggest supporter.

More than you or I ever could be.

With that said, I wonder what Anthony DeAngelo's personality is like.

I hear it's not quite the same frown

    1) Glad we agree here

    2) AHL defenseman

    3) But they don't. They have 49 right now *Not including Gardiner* who will be returning at some point. They don't have the space to make this move.

    4) Dermott played RD in juniors, he's been listed like that since they started specifying what side defenseman play on. It's like saying Pesce is a LD because he played there 1 year.

    5) It couldn't hurt.

    6) TDA is a 50 point producer from the blueline. I would not be surprised to hear he lives in a cave Dundon dug under PNC Arena trapped in metal chains.

    1. Splendid smile

    2. Eeek!

    3. When do you expect Gardiner to return?

I admit if he is going to return and Gardiner is, in fact, not currently included in the 49 right now, then this trade falls through.

    4. Then, maybe Capfriendly should fix that about Dermott.

    It's rather misleading.

    5. If Canes lose a big game in OT and Cole/DeAngelo are both on the ice at the time the OT goal was scored, it just might frown

    6. I would not be surprised if he refuses to pay the rent smile

(I'm just going to ignore 1 and 2 now since we seem to have reached a natural conclusion!)

    3) Gardiner is out until minimum the TDL, but if you look at the team breakdown, he's currently listed as being on IR which takes his contract away but not his cap hit.

    4) There is a thread about player position changes on the forums, where you can recommend player positions get changed. For example, Jordan Staal has not played left wing since he left Pittsburgh but still gets listed as one.

    5) Carolina never use more than one defenseman in OT. Usually it was Slavin or Pesce anyway. Hamilton would get a run out on the odd occasion but it was mostly Slavin. Even Skjei would get major minutes too, earning him the nickname "Ironlung" from Tripp Tracy (Carolina's colour commentator)

    6) No, no.... the Rangers buyout fees cover the rent.
