TML - Taking advantage of TB's tight cap?

Created by: dls9
Team: 2017-18 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 12, 2017
Published: Mar. 12, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The leafs could very well use their cap space and TB's lack of cap space to strong arm them into losing a very good, young player who would fit Toronto's timeline perfectly. Looking at Tampa's roster for the upcoming season, we see that they have to re-sign the trio of Drouin, Johnson and Palat to longer contracts. Palat and Johnson currently make 3.33 Mil/yr, and would definitely be looking for an increase in salary, most likely in the 4.5-5 million dollar range. Furthermore, Hedman's 7.85 Mil and Vasilevskiy's 3.5 Mil both kick in at the beginning of next season, on top of Stamkos's 8.5 Mil., Kucherov's 4.76 Mil and Callahan's 5.8 Mil. Clearly, this team is very pressed against the cap.

Toronto could make an Offer Sheet to TB for Drouin for 6 Million. This forces TB to either match the offer sheet and be unable to re-sign Johnson and Palat, or decide to NOT match the offer, and take the draft pick compensation. Toronto has no need for the 2018 picks, as their core is stable already.

The rest is pretty self explanatory. Brodin for JVR plus picks (w/ 2 mil retained) - Minnesota has a surplus of deference, and Brodin fits the timeline for the Maple Leafs to be competitive.

As for Toronto's cap struggles come the following year, not resigning Bozak and Komorov frees up cap space for when it comes to sign Matthews and Marner.

**EDIT** Trade with MIN changed from Brodin to Dumba

    I think Minni would want something different that than JVR. IMO, you've underpaid Brown, Hyman and Zaitsev just to overpay Drouin. And while Brodin is an improvement over the departed Hunwick, Carrick and Marzenko are still on the ice for 38 minutes a game. My thought is, forget giving up good assets for Drouin and improve the RHD.

    The Drouin idea is an interesting one that I would love to see happen! I agree that we don't need the draft picks if we were to get him! As for the minny trade, I think we need to look at our RHD situation first as Zaitsev is the only reliable option there. Maybe Spurgeon or Dumba instead?? And when Gardiner leaves we can look at adding another LHD for the second pairing with Dermott playing third. Also Brown should be making 2-2.5 mil. All in all, good idea with Drouin!!!

    Wrong compensation for Drouin, has to be their own picks, so leafs would need to reacquire their 2018 third.

    Dumba = Top 4 Defenseman
    Brodin = Top 2 Defenseman/Number 1 Defenseman

    Dumba's good, but i'd rather have brodin.
