Salvagable 2021 Sens

Created by: bicboi64
Team: 2021-22 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 7, 2021
Published: Nov. 7, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
We have a vet in Giroux who is going to re-sign with us. Instead of getting him for free in UFA, we're paying for him so we can salvage this season and have some of his play rub off on our roster.

Myers for $6 million for only 2 years is better then Zaitsev, that is all. Nucks could use the cap space and the $5 million they save from moving Myers and having Brown might appeal to Benning (who we might as well fleece).

Stralman is another stop gap that is better then Josh Brown and is also easier to pay then having Zaitsev.

Any thoughts? I'm just desperate for any success after getting slapped by TB

We can't succeed with Murray. We have to pray that the Hawks will take a gamble on him since Fleury has been meh. Fleury might want to be part of an organization that isn't so disgusting as the Hawks.

This all depends on the players agreeing to be moved based on what they have, but we need to do something so that this season isn't a tank season.. We have to be competitive and now blown out completely.

Here’s my steps to make this team better:
1) Do Nothing in season
2) pick up a top 5 pick
3) make a trade in the summer
4) Bring up Sanderson
5) Get rid of the depth players that suck
6) Try to sign a great veteran like Giroux

On those trades proposed......Hawks don't want Murray and his contract long term. Flyers want to win this season so Giroux stays, Arizona doesn't want Zaitsev long term.
I'm surprised the Sens haven't been better this season. But I like the team long term. Gotta develop those young players this season even if the win results aren't good.

Why on earth would Ottawa trade for Tyler Myers?? He's horrendous lmao. Brown is awful but he makes 1.2 and is gone at the end of the year.

Flyers have no reason to trade Giroux right now, they will fght to make the playoffs all season. Best chance we'd have is this summer if he goes UFA

No point for Arizona to gdet Zaitsev right now, not for a 3rd

I would hope that Myers and the Canucks would want this deal to happen. I don't care if Myers is overpaid, Sens need overpaid players that can help

EDIT : yeah forgot Myers had 2 years left after this one so can't do that

I would do the Murray deal because Murray contract was bad right from the start, even if he played better. Fleury is one of the rare goalies that I could see doing better than most behind this putrid defense.

Tyler Myers can't be worse then Zaitsev. My rationale to have him is two years of him at $6 million seems better then 4 more years of Zaitsev, who is also immensely overplayed by Smith. Also can get rid of JBrown who Smith also seems to think is a stalwart on the back end.

Yeah, I would just hang onto Brown rather than putting the team in a longer term problem. Myers is definitely better than Zaitsev. They have a similar length contract and it would help Vancouver free up some cap space. I would try to send Zaitsev to Vancouver for Myers. You'd probably have to throw in a pick (nothing more than a 3rd).

Yes, this would be ideal. Unfortunately, it's hard to trust that management won't bring in another depth player that sucks. I get the sense they're just expecting all of the draft picks they've made to just turn into the players that will take this team into being a contender. You can really see that mentality with the selection of Boucher this passed summer. They definitely drafted for need with him. I hope that's not the case as they will need to supplement the draft picks with good vets.

I think we need to make a trade to strengthen at the top of the lineup

Even that makes no sense though. Zaitsev has a way more manageable buyout this summer, or at 4.5mil for the same term, is less onerous of a cap dump. Potentially adding a pick to turn Nikita Zaitsev into a player who is a marginal upgrade on Zaitsev, but with a worse contract, is absolutely terrible. After this season it's not acceptable to get by on slight Improvements on guys who are nowhere near good enough. They need a guy who is legitimately capable of playing in the 2RD spot.

Honestly, I agree that Myers isn't that good. He's a 3rd pairing RD at best. The problem is that Zaitsev isn't even an NHL player. He can't keep up. I'd much rather have a serviceable defenseman playing 3rd pairing minutes for 3 years at just $1.5 million more instead of a guy that can't keep up at all. I agree the team needs a 2nd pairing RD. Melnyk isn't going to pay a guy for 6 years to not play for the team. They're also going to have to consider buying out White and probably Del Zotto as well. Unfortunately Dorion keeps making these stupid mistakes at the pro level that is setting this team back imo. Re-thinking my point about throwing in a pick though. It could probably be straight 1 for 1 since we're also doing Vancouver a favour in opening up the $1.5 million.

I don't agree at all that Melnyk would be so opposed to buying Zaitsev out if it made the team better. First off at the end of the season Zaitsev will have two more years left on his deal, so the buy out is over 4 years, not six. You don't include the season we're currently in. Also if the question is "would he sign off on it" I'd point to the Bobby Ryan contract which was bought out last year, which was a much bigger contract over the same term.

I'd rather not have dead capspace, it was a waste to buy out Ryan since he can at least provide vet leadership but Zaitsev does nothing.. Myers is fine as a third pairing RD who can step into the second pairing for a few games. DJ Smith plays Zaitsev wayyy too much and he might play some of the rookies that have performed fantastically so far instead of overplaying Myers who he'd have less familiarity with. One of Thomson or JBD ought to make the jump next year and having someone like Myers to eat up some time on the PK would be great.
