If They Can Make the Money Work

Description
There will have to be some salary cap gymnastics worked out to make these deals work, but I think these are the two guys the Caps need to target. Maybe finding a taker for Kempny before the deadline would get the job done. Not sure what the prorated cap hits will be at the deadline for this to work.

I have more faith in Holtby than either of our two young guys to lead us on a deep run. If Dallas is on the outside looking in come February, I think this is a logical move for the Caps to make. The resurgent start to the season gives me faith in him coming back to DC, and if things look rough early, turn back to Samsonov/Vanecek.

With all the money Vegas will have to move out to get Eichel under the cap, McNabb is a likely candidate to go. I think his physicality and ability to clear the crease is something we need that's really important come playoff time. He can play the Brooks Orpik role without being such a pylon.

Once this team gets healthy, I think there's a real shot to make some noise. The East seems pretty wide open, so why not make a real run at this thing? Without mortgaging the future, I like these two moves to boost our chances of at least getting out of the Metro this year.

You can have Dobby for that without retention, but Holtby with retention is an easy pass.

He’s our clear cut starter moving him for a meh pick and also we’re retaining, doesn’t seem to benefit us very much.

A good comparison would be Rittich, he got a 3rd half retained. Rittich had a .904SV% and he was their backup, but he had only one year left. Holtby has a .924 SV% currently and is our starter, he also only has one year left. Dobby has a .897SV% currently (will probably get above .900 in the next few games) and he's our backup, only problem is that he's making 3.3 and has the extra year of term. I'd be willing to give him to you guys for free.

Vegas has the cap due to three big name players on LTIR. But even McNabb at 2.5m doesn't move their cap needle much, after all he has to be replaced on the roster.

Caps probably aren't interested in Khudobin, that extra year of term makes him a no go. The actual trade itself can obviously be negotiated. This was more just to show that Holtby should be a target come the TDL

Jesse Granger from the Athletic wrote a piece on how to get under the cap once everyone's ready to come off of LTIR, and the most likely way for them to make it work is by dealing their two highest cap hit pending UFAs, Smith and McNabb (along with a few other demotions to the AHL).

Might be first time in history, that a team doesn't get cap relief for long term injuries.
